Shearer’s Spotlight: It’s A Glass Half Empty Kind Of Week

by

Each Friday here on the VH1 Blog, our VH1 Top 20 Video Countdown host Jim Shearer (@jimshearer on Twitter) will be sharing his Shearer?s Spotlight with us. Be sure to tune into the Top 20 countdown tomorrow morning when it airs on VH1 at 9 a.m. ET/PT.

This week my glass is half empty. Here are three great things that kind of bum me out:

1) Krist Novoselic Performing Nevermind From Beginning to End

To pay homage to the 20th Anniversary of Nirvana?s Nevermind, founding member Krist Novoselic will be joining a collection of Seattle bands, in Seattle (Sept. 20), to play the stone classic in its entirety.

Why I?m Bummed: I won?t be there, and since the Foo Fighters will be playing in Cleveland that night, Dave Grohl won?t be there either. It also would have been cool if Kurt Cobain were around to perform these generation-forging tunes.

2) Lauryn Hill Performing Miseducation From Beginning to End

On this summer?s Rock The Bells tour, Lauryn Hill is performing her classic album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.

Why I?m Bummed: It just occurred to me that Lauryn Hill only has one proper studio album, and I saw her perform most of the songs from it?plus Fugees songs?when she toured off Miseducation in the late ?90s. Lauryn Hill has lost a step since then, which means the current renditions probably won?t be as tight as I remember them?and if she just sticks with Miseducation tracks that means I won?t get to hear any Fugees material, either.

3) Katy Perry Gets Fifth #1 Single From Same Album

Going five singles deep on an album is mighty impressive, but having each and every one of those tracks hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart is a feat that had only been done by Michael Jackson, until Katy Perry achieved it with the five juicy singles from her album, Teenage Dream.

Why I?m Bummed: Until I did my homework, I was positive Michael Jackson achieved this feat from his legendary album, Thriller. Not so, his five #1?s came from his album Bad. I was also shocked to realize that ?Smooth Criminal??the damn tastiest jam off that album?never hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. He could?ve, and should?ve, had six.
