Tuned In: St. Vincent Performs A Moody “Cheerleader” For Conan

by (@kat_george)

St. Vincent‘s “Cheerleader” sounds like Zola Jesus and Shirley Manson took a really fun trip to the beach. On the way they probably ran into Girls and listened to Veruca Salt on the radio. There’s something of the angst riddled 90s alterna-girl in St. Vincent, but something of the West Coast too. Performing last night on Conan, St. Vincent gave a moody rendition of “Cheerleader,” with an anti-authoritarian attitude and irreverence on her sleeve. And can we just talk about that red skirt for a moment? Everything about the performance was wonderful, from St. Vincent’s haphazard sex appeal and 90s redux style to her Garbage-esque vocal and defiant lyricism.

Elsewhere on late night…
