Against Me! singer Tom Gabel’s courage is remarkable. In the upcoming issue of Rolling Stone Gabel tells writer Josh Eells about her plans to move forward with beginning to live as a woman. She is the first huge rockstar to come out as transgendered, therefore she thought it was important to have an honest discussion about it, according to a brief post on RollingStone.com. Suffering from gender dysphoria for years, Gabel has decided to undergo electrolysis treatment and take hormones for the transition.
Gabel’s wife fully supports the decision, Gabel told Rolling Stone. “For me, the most terrifying thing about this was how she would accept the news,” says Gabel. “But she’s been super-amazing and understanding.” The singer hopes talking about it will help people understand. “I’m going to have embarrassing moments,” says Gabel, “and that won’t be fun. But that’s part of what talking to you is about – is hoping people will understand, and hoping they’ll be fairly kind.”
Gabel will openly talk about what this means for Against Me! in the full article that hits newstands this Friday. We’re optimistic that sharing her story with the world will lead to an advancement in the conversation around transgendered individuals. Kudos to Gabel for making such a huge leap. She’ll make one badass rocker!
