When Nicki Minaj performs one never knows whether to expect Roman, Martha, just Nicki or all three. Usually all three make an appearance at some point, which makes for a thrilling and versatile set. Over the weekend Minaj performed at Wango Tango, the 15th annual all-day concert hosted by LA’s KIIS FM. A white long tutu clad Minaj performed “Did It On ‘Em,” “Beez In The Trap,” “Right By My Side,” “Roman’s Holiday” and a remix of Big Sean’s “Dance (A$$).” So far this year Minaj’s performances have been somewhat of a doozy. Remember the creepy exorcism at the GRAMMY awards? Well, for this performance Minaj channeled Roman, but also brought the element of hip-hop that we’d love to see more of.
One of the reasons Minaj has such a global appeal is her ability to cater to a wide array of audiences–something for those that are lover’s of pop and R&B, but maybe not hip-hop; and then she taps into the braggadocio and rawness that die hard hip-hop fans love. In all white bodysuit matched with tights and white sneakers Minaj worked the stage as the superstar she is, but she owns the authentic mixtape Nicki feel that we were introduced to in 2008. The focus was on the music using very little theatrics. But less theatrics didn’t mean a boring set, in fact it was the most compelling we’ve seen in a while from her. With the collection of songs she chose there was something for everybody. Once again she draws you in, reminding you why she’s Nicki Minaj.
