Sunday night’s MTV Movie Awards was all about, well, the movies. And the fashion, both (good and bad). But the musical performances deserve a nod of their own. The rock band Fun. performed their hit single “We Are Young” to what sounded like either a glitch in the sound system or struggling vocals. Almost screaming the lead hollered through his performance. Janelle Monae joined the band on stage in her signature black tuxedo accentuated with a black fedora and something still sounded a bit off with the sound of their performance. Nonetheless, we love Fun. and Janelle Monae as collaborators, just as much as we sing along to “We Are Young.”
Wiz Khalifa’s takes “playing hard” seriously. It was one big party on stage and where his fans stood with plastic red cups while Khalifa rapped his hit single “Work Hard Play Hard.” He never removed his dark sunglasses, probably an attempt to cover his hazy eyes from the marijuana we assume he’d been smoking. He’s a proud weedhead. His energy remained high (no, not that sort of high), and it probably didn’t hurt that his fiance Amber Rose was in the audience glowing as she watched her beau perform. Wiz was having so much fun that he forgot all about the PG-13 version he was supposed to do for live television. MTV bleeped out a few explicit words that slipped out as Wiz was rapping. Despite his verbal slip ups, he killed it. Martin Solveig, the DJ for the night, stayed close to the electronic dance music theme but without making the original song sound completely different. It may have been a night all about the actors and actresses, but Fun., Janelle Monae and Wiz Khalifa rocked out.
