The plot thickens in the case of the missing Barb from Sunday’s Hot 97 Summer Jam concert. Last night Nicki Minaj called in to Hot 97 to clear the air with Funkmaster Flex about not performing after feeling disrespected by Peter Rosenberg. Per Idolator.com Nicki called in to 97.1’s competitor station, 105.1, to speak to The Breakfast Club this morning, hours after her 55 minute radio interview with Flex. The rivalry between the two New York hip-hop and R&B stations runs deep. Don’t believe us? Ask former archenemies Nas and Jay-Z.
Nicki tells The Breakfast Club she had an amazing show planned with surprises from Beenie Man, Cam’ron, Foxy Brown and Nas. As far as the infamous “Starships” in question she said, “You know what the funniest thing is? After all this has been said and done, I wasn’t gonna do ‘Starships,'” she told the Breakfast Club. “And I think people know that. I’m way smarter than that. I know what people wanted to see.” Good call, Nicki. “Starships” may not have gone over too well amongst songs like “Bustin’ At Em” or “Rack City.”
In the midst of all the drama a rumor sparked that she planned on including a funeral scene with Lil’ Kim in the coffin for her show. Nicki quickly responded saying that’s not in her character. She managed to throw throw so much shade you wouldn’t even need an umbrella. “Let’s stop with all the rumors that are giving people false hope that they’re relevant,” she said, which was an obvious diss toward Kim. The Queen Bee is not going to be happy with the self-proclaimed Barbie calling her irrelevant. Nicki also wanted to address the notion that she’s pulling the “female card.” What is a “female card” anyway? “I’m not using a female card. I am a female,” she said. Adding that since she was only woman on the bill she should be respected.
This whole debacle is beyond messy. Rosenberg has said he’s not apologizing for his remarks about “Starships” not being real hip-hop. And at this point Nicki said she doesn’t want an apology. Her main concern continues to be the disappointed fans, therefore, according to her, the free concert she’s putting together is already in the works. Until then we’ve grabbed our popcorn as we watch this all unfold. For behind the scenes photos of Hot 97 Summer Jam click through the gallery below!
