It’s been quite a while since we’ve heard any new music from 90s R&B heartthrob Ginuwine. On the BET red carpet last night Ginuwine, Tank and Tyrese mentioned working on an album together as TGT. Fortunately for us we don’t have to wait for the collaboration album to hear some classic Ginuwine. YOK artist Ed Sheeran covers Ginuwine’s “Pony” sounding more like a veteran singer than the 21-year-old upcoming new kid on the block.
The influence of soul music on Sheeran is apparent. When Sheeran stopped by the VH1 offices he covered Nina Simone’s “Feeling Good” in one of our favorite YOK live performances. After hearing “Feeling Good” it comes as no surprise he’d vocally nail “Pony” over his acoustic guitar. He effortlessly hits the alto notes of the chorus before taking it a little higher for “if you’re horny” and going right back to the low melodies. Ed Sheeran may be young, but he has an old soul and a veteran’s taste for music.
