The wait is finally over for the release of Azealia Banks‘ Fantasea mixtape. At 12:00 p.m. EST the Harlem rapper will release the 19 track mixtape that has been pushed back more times than we can count. For the true A. Banks fans the mermaid themed mixtape will be well worth the wait. Despite the skepticism around whether she’d ever release her debut album (which has also been pushed back) or a mixtape, Banks continued to release dope music keeping the peaked interest of music critics and fans. In the interim she released the four song EP 1991, the video to “Liquorice” and songs from the eagerly awaited Fantasea.
Yesterday the 21-year-old took to Twitter to share some thoughts about the forthcoming mixtape, calling it a test run in a sense. “Fantasea is almost kind of a first album of sorts. But it happened by mistake. It’s weird,” she tweeted. “This is a test run. I tried a lot of cool things. Sounds I thought were progressive, beats made by close friends, different flowsss [sic],” she continued. Leading up to Fantasea’s debut she dropped “Neptune” ft. Shystie a day prior to the release. The latest song has electronic underwater groove. From previous tracks “Jumanji,” “Aquababe” and Styles P-assisted “Nathan” we’ve heard the hardcore Cam’ron influenced sound to the more eccentric flow. Watching her process leading up to today has been both filled with excitement and curiosity. But good things are worth waiting for. With that said, 12:00 p.m. can’t come quick enough.
