A Year Since Amy Winehouse’s Death: Dad Says It’s Difficult To Listen To Back To Black

by

She was a young 27 when she passed away a year ago today. Amy Winehouse was the bluesy soulful British singer, songwriter who was already being considered a musical genius, or at least on her way to becoming one. Only two albums in she became a household name–one that rappers collaborated with and singers admired. Her second album Back to Black led to five Grammy awards making her the first British female singer to win that many. There were definitely some troubled days in Amy’s life as she battled with drugs and alcohol. However, in Spin’s rare behind the scenes footage of Amy during a photo shoot in 2007 shot by then-husband Blake Fielder-Civil, her troubled days seem to be washed away with nothing but remnants of happiness.

A cheesing Amy jokes with her ex-husband about the live chicken she holds in the shoot. She said working with renowned photographer Terry Richardson was a dream come true. Seeing her happy makes us smile. As fans we remember her by playing her music, Amy’s father Mitch Winehouse wrote a touching post “Remembering Amy” for HuffingtonPost calling her the greatest female vocalist of all time. Mr. Winehouse also wrote about their relationship having a lot to do with music, how she critiqued her own music and how hard it is for him to listen to Back to Black. “But I have always found it hard to listen to the songs Amy wrote for Back to Black. That’s because all of the songs on that album, apart from “Rehab,” are about her ex-husband Blake, and all of the terrible things he put her through.”

It has to be tough for any parent to lose a child. On whether or not listening to her music helps him cope he writes,”Sometimes listening to Amy’s music helps me; sometimes it makes me feel more sad. I miss Amy more than I can say. When I’ve finished writing this I’m going to sit down with a cup of tea and listen to Amy’s recording of ‘The Nearness of You.’” Hopefully on today listening to her beautiful voice helps. Forever missed, never forgotten.
