The ink on her divorce papers has only just dried, and rumors of a relationship with Florence + The Machine guitarist Robert Ackroyd have already come and gone. And now, word is it that Katy Perry has taken-up with John Mayer. According to reports, the two were all handhold-y at the Soho House on July 19th, just three days after Perry’s split from Russell Brand was made official. It could all be nothing, or just an experiment in what could have been, but — with apologies to Mayer, and if we’re not too terrible to say — we sort of hope that there is something to these rumors.
Mayer’s dating record is well-tread with popstars, and he seems to have a way of turning them away better than they came. Taylor Swift, for example: The two singer/song-writers hugged (a whole bunch), made beautiful music, and then, well — “Don’t you think I was too young to be messed with?/ The girl in the dress cried the whole way home” — we all know how that ended. “Dear John” might have made Mayer “feel terrible,” but it’s the force to be reckoned with in Taylor’s deep catalog of revenge anthems.
Katy Perry’s song writing has so far been generally up-beat and impersonal. But if she wanted to set this dark last year to music, “Dear John” would be a bar to reach for. Which is to say, if Perry was in need of some sad empty town over which to shine her fireworks, she might have found just the one. We’re not rooting for heartbreak, but we are hoping for more songs as piercing as “Dear John.” What say you John, would you make this happen?
