It’s clear from the very outset of Green Days‘s video for “Oh Love,” the first single from the first of three LPs that they’ll be releasing over the next 6 months or so, that they’re putting “protest rock” firmly in their rear view mirror. So much so that it takes nearly 30 seconds until we even get a glimpse at Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tré Cool. Instead, viewers are treated to images that are clearly the precursor to a party: Long eyelashes, sequins, tattoos, beautiful babes in fishnet stockings, take-out Chinese food and more than a few beers flood the screen as Green Day get ready to take the stage.
Once the camera finally gets around to panning to Billie Joe Armstrong, we see him get a handle on his trusty guitar, and that’s when then the previously a capella track really kicks into gear. The girls get comfortable to watch the show as candles placed in wine bottles help to illuminate the room. Soon after, Tré joins in on the jams and after Mike has his fun with the girls, he jumps in too. Two minutes into the video, the intimate audience finally starts feeling and moving to the song.
With an unexpectedly sultry video like this from the former snot-nosed (and proud of it!) punks, Green Day has clearly turned a corner. As the song progresses, so does the party and the gang gets into some reindeer games that we wish we could join in on. The video is exactly what we’d expect a badass, groupie-filled, private punk rock band party to look like and we are grateful for this little peek into the awesomeness that is being Green Day.
