Some old outtake footage of One Direction‘s “What Makes You Beautiful” video has picked up a bit of buzz lately. Why? The British fab-hair five sang a cover of Oasis‘ “Wonderwall!” Now take a minute to reconcile the fact that the most successful UK act between 1995 and 2005 was just covered by the tour de force of English boy bands whose members were likely between the ages of one and three when the track was first released.
If you’re a bit conflicted, you’re not the only one. Somehow the perfectly coiffed guys sitting campfire style along the shore with waves crashing behind them and Niall Horan strumming an acoustic guitar a la Noel Gallagher didn’t rub everyone the right way. But we’ll leave it up to you to decide if they did it justice.
Coincidentally, the cover surfaced mere days after the London Olympics Closing Ceremony where One Direction was among a list of performers including Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher whose band Beady Eye sang a rendition of “Wonderwall.” So far both Liam and Noel, who isn’t the biggest non-rock music fan (remember his beef over Jay-Z performing at Glastonbury in 2008?), have been silent about the One-derful attempt. Either way, props to One Direction’s diversity. It makes them beautiful to us!
