The next Bracket Madness pairing finds two leading ladies pitted against each other, each singing for their chance at the Greatest Artist of the 00s title: Britney Spears and Beyoncé. In a decade lucky for its many talented artists, these two both earned their Queen B status as singers and stars alike, making hits and moments, and setting a high bar for all those who will follow. Only on, though, can be the greatest. Who should it be?
After a successful run with Destiny’s Child in the 90s, Beyoncé spent much of the 00s establishing herself as a star in her own right as a singer, an actor, and just generally a force to be reckoned with. She spent the decade cutting her acting teeth with roles in movies like Carmen: A Hip Hopera and Austin Powers in Goldmember, dating fellow Greatest Artist of the 00s contender Jay-Z, and putting out album after single after hit. Four solo albums, 36 singles, 16 Grammy Awards, 11 MTV Video Music Awards, and a beautiful baby later, she’s showing no signs of waning.
Britney Spears, meanwhile, straight up changed the game. Born and raised on Disney’s Mickey Mouse Club by way of Louisiana, she is the prototypical twenty-first century pop star. From first hit, she’s had us begging for “One More Time.” And now, so many singles, children, marriages and breakdowns later, we’re still wanting more, because Britney is something like a habit. But could we “Hold It Against” her?
