This round of Bracket Madness‘ third match-up draws a battle between popular Aught rockers Nickelback and Linkin Park. In a decade where pop mostly reigned supreme, both these rock groups were able to establish sounds and styles of their own, and to sell tons and tons of records. Nickelback have filled arenas with their melodic, post-grunge rock, while Linkin Park have paved the way for rock-rap groups a many. If only one of these two great rock groups can move on to the next round of the Greatest Artist of the 00s, who should it be?
Hailing from Canada, Nickelback picked up somewhere were 90s grunge rockers like Pearl Jam left off and became on of the most commercially successful acts of the decade. They broke in 2001 with “How Your Remind Me,” a rare song that still sees play even ten years after its release, and have posted a steady run of hits since. Nickelback most recently made headlines with the baffling new George Costanza-and-coffee themed video for their new single “Trying Not To Love You,” and with out of the blue news that ‘Back frontman Chad Kroeger is engaged to be married to pop punk princess Avril Lavigne.
It seemed like Nickelback had most of the rock market covered, and so Linkin Park found a space all their own. They were major instigators of rap-rock, and they have two frontmen: Chester Bennnington, who sings, and Mike Shinoda, who raps. Their debut album, Hybrid Theory, showed off their innovative style and went certified diamond off of the success of hits like their Grammy Award-winning “Crawling.” And even still, their albums are topping charts.
