Only a couple days have passed since the new lineup of American Idol judges were officially announced, but the rumors of a brewing feud between new judges Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey have buzzed since Nicki’s name was thrown in the pot as one of the potential judges. Nicki and MC join Keith Urban and Randy Jackson for American Idol’s 12th season. MTV News stopped by the Idol set where the legendary diva shut down any and all chatter about any turmoil. “How are we gonna feud in two days?” she laughed. “A feud takes a little longer to spread out [than that].” There it is straight from the five octave range vocalist’s mouth.
Unfortunately, the concocted story of faux drama between the pop icon and rap star will mostly continue instead of dying the slow death it should. Women have always been pitted against one another–welcome to a patriarchal society. Two celebrity women or women of influence warring makes for good ratings and page views through the roof. The way sexism works, it reinforces the idea that women are inherently more emotional, catty and irrational. Did we mention unable to get along with other women? This idea is constantly reinforced by a strategic narrative throughout media. And women knowingly and unknowingly participate in it.
Remember Brandy and Monica‘s “beef” years ago? Here were two young, talented, burgeoning artists that had never had a problem with one another per se. As adults, years later and now as friends, both women admitted it was people around them and the media that created an issue that wasn’t really there. There are countless other examples, Mariah and Nicki being the latest.
These ladies are busy enjoying their new gig while the desperate dream of a girl fight between the two. “It’s fun, it’s music, it’s singing, it’s laughter,” said Mariah Carey while Nicki laughed along with her. Some beef, huh?
