Today is only the first Monday of fall, and already things are looking pretty Red. Anticipation for Taylor Swift‘s new album is high, with “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” already breaking records and tearing up the charts and her VH1 Storytellers on the way. And Taylor’s decision to roll-out the album slowly, one song every Monday on Good Morning America until the whole thing hits shelves on October 22, has us even more eager. This morning she previewed “Begin Again,” a song she says is about “when you’ve gotten through a really bad relationship and you finally dust yourself off and go on a first date,” and that finds her sounding a lot more like the girl from Fearless than than the pop star she is “Never Ever.” And here she had us all believing she was leaving that all behind and going dubstep!
“I think it’s strange that you think I’m funny because he never did,” she sings. “I’ve been spending the last eight months thinking all love ever does is break, burn and end,” and — because Taylor loves her coffee dates so — “but on a Wednesday in a cafe, we watched it begin again.” So there are still hints of revenge here, as she’s not so quickly letting off the guy who “never” thought she was funny, but it’s nice to hear that she sometimes has dates that go well, and that she is able to feel hopeful about love. And of course we must wonder, Taylor being the queen of revenge, who she might be singing about here? There are two boys to place, the one who thinks she’s funny and the one who didn’t. Given their shared perchance for maple lattes, we’ll start by suggesting that this song is about Jake Gyllenhaal before things went sour. What do you think?
From the beginning, Taylor has been insistent that this album be one of risks and departures, but this song sounds pretty typically her. And so Boys aside, we are curious as to how this fairly straight country-pop tune will play on an album with that so rumored dubstep song — and from the sounds of it, curious is how Taylor wants us. “I really want there to be so many surprises left on the record for when it comes out eventually,” she told Rolling Stone. Until next Monday…
