The visuals for Nas‘ personal desire to find love featuring the indelible Amy Winehouse has arrived. The soulful “Cherry Wine” with vocals from the late soul singer was an instant favorite from Nas’ 10th studio album Life Is Good. True to his word, Nas honored Amy in the video directed by Jay Martin. Nas is the loner bartender mesmerized by a beautiful customer. Peep the cherry he drops in her cocktail. Amy’s soul stirring voice plays over the jukebox while images of her performing flash against the brick wall of the bar. The new object of his affection teases him with seductive eyes as she plays pool alone.
Like most love stories (in this case strong infatuation) there’s always a bump in the road along the way. Another man has his eye on the same beauty and makes his move. Luckily for Nas, he’s way smoother, and in the end, he gets the girl. They walk off into the rising sun answering Nas’ probing question, “Where is she?” It looks as if he’s found her. Amy’s photo, with microphone in hand, wraps the video with: “In Memory Amy Winehouse 1983-2011.” “Cherry Wine” as a song is nearly perfection. Even if only for a moment, seeing Amy doing what she did best feels good, just like hearing her voice.
