Everybody has got two-cents to share when it comes to last week’s fight between American Idol judges Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey. Host Ryan Seacrest and fellow judge Keith Urban both made attempts to mend the fissure, while The Voice judge Cee Lo relished the news as an opportunity to knock the rival program. And so while we await for word from Britney Spears and Team X Factor, we are delighted to hear report that retired Idol coach and true-and-through rock goddess Stevie Nicks has chimed in! And being a woman who knows a thing or two about drama, boy did she chime. Team Nicki, you might want to stand back for this.
Nicks seems to relate to Carey and, when she was approached about the drama by The Daily during promotion for her new documentary In Your Dreams, she totally went off on Nicki. “How dare this little girl!” she snapped. “If I had been Mariah I would have walked over to Nicki and strangled her to death right there … I would have killed her in front of all those people and had to go to jail for it.”
Nicks apologized before Barbara Walters got word of the threat, accounting her dramatic remarks to an “exhausting day of interviews” and calling for peace between all artists. And may her gracious retraction be a model for all future pot-stirrers:
It was very out of character for me and I deeply regret what I said. I feel very protective toward Mariah Carey, who has gone through many difficulties in her life, and I spoke without thinking. I think all artists should be respectful toward one another and that includes me. I am truly sorry.
Drama aside, Nicks had only good things to say about the show. She is appreciative of the boost competition shows provide for aspiring artists — “That’s how you get seen these days” — and says she “absolutely” would have saddled up if Fleetwood Mac were just getting going, though she warns that Lindsey Buckingham “probably would have given them the finger.” (That might be good for ratings!) However, she draws the line at judging, a job she says she would only take, “If you stick me in the middle of a burning fire.”
