Should a pop culture question be thrown into the pit during tonight’s town-hall style debate, Barack Obama will be well prepared. In a week spent on the trail and with all his presidential duties, the President found time to mediate the ongoing Idol feud and to woo Jay-Z. And here we are, still trying to find time to catch up on Homeland!
On air with Miami radio host Michael Yo this week, the president broke from his usual refrains — “the economy, we’ll fix that,” and so on — to take a question about the current state of American Idol affairs. “I think that they are going to be able to sort it out, I am confident,” he said when asked if he might repair Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey‘s tempestuous relationship in his second term. “I’m all about bringing people together, working for the same cause. I think both outstanding artists are going to be able to make sure that they’re moving forward and not backwards.”
When pressed, though, he admits that me might be Team Mariah, if only because he owes her as much. “Mariah, she’s actually done some events for us,” Obama said. “I’ve gotten to know her and Nick [Cannon], she’s a wonderful lady.” As for Nicki, not even a bit bruised by that whole “I’m a Republican voting for Mitt Romney/ You lazy bitches is f***ing up the economy” business, he says: “Nicki I don’t know, but I’ve got her on my iPod.” Vote Obama in ’12, and there may be peace at the American Idol judges’ table after all.
Meanwhile, BO can rest assured that he’s got Hov flexing for him. Last month, the President joined Jay-Z (via video) at his Made In America Festival to encourage the crowd that, “You can make it if you try. Jay-Z did.” Jay has now returned the favor, offering his glowing endorsement in a video for the President’s campaign. “What he represented to a nation of kids was hope,” Jay says. “Having someone in office who understand how powerful your voice can be is very important.” And we might add that having someone in office who can understand the power of a united Idol judges’ table is important, as well.
