It’s Friday, so let’s get into that Brandy! No, not that brandy, you sophisticated lushes. I’m talking about the R&B singer whose singles probably were the soundtrack to your adolescence. Quit waxing nostalgic about sitting up in your room long enough to vote in today’s Friday Face-Off Music Video poll. You decide which Brandy jam you’re down for the most: “I Wanna Be Down” or “Put It Down.” Okay, now have that drink while we make our case for each.
“I Wanna Be Down” - How can you not Stan for a teenage crush anthem that has endured nearly two decades? Not to mention: It’s. My. Jam. With good reason, too. The simple sentiment of Brandy’s 1994 debut is so universal it still resonates in 2012 like a 90’s “Call Me Maybe.” And the video is timeless – clothes excepted. That image of Brandy lying on her bedroom rug trying to sweet talk her boo on the phone is something we’ve all enacted, though with less privacy (get off the phone, Mom!). That look may have even inspired some future pop stars to work that sexy but innocent angle. And don’t tell me you weren’t reminded of taking graduation pictures as Brandy swung in casual flannel in front of that budget backdrop. See! Teen Brandy is just like us, except with fewer pimples, because, let’s be honest, the girl was a walking Cover Girl ad at age 15. That complexion alone makes vintage B-Rocka a winner this week.

“Put It Down” - After 18 years in the music business, Brandy’s still got it. Never Say Never was one of the first albums I ever bought, and I’m so happy to see she’s back on top. Her trademark braids resurface in “Put It Down” after a long hiatus, but she gives them a sexy update by pairing the throwback ‘do with a Madonna-esque cone bra and sick sky-high leopard wedges. I’m not the only one who thinks Brandy looks great in this video – check out the harem of hotties fawning all over her at the 1:08 mark? And it’s pretty damn hard to deny those diva dance moves – make Beyonce proud, Brandy! Hands down, the best part of this video has to be the collaboration with Chris Brown. The chemistry between the two of them is undeniable, and her choreography is on par with some of Breezy’s past videos. The way they “put it down” here, I think I may have fallen in love with her music all over again. Bran’Nu for the win!
