Today In Best Of’s Lists: Rolling Stone, NPR, Time and Idolator Countdown The Year

by (@zaragolden)

Another day closer to 2013, another load of Best Of lists to parse! And so we’re back, today with Rolling Stone, NPR, Time and Idolator and a whole bunch more tallies for Frank Ocean, Japandroids, Kendrick Lamar and Fiona Apple. A trend emerges…

This is a big one: Rolling Stone, a forefather to the Best Of game, dropped their 50 Best Albums of 2012 yesterday. The list includes this year’s usual suspects, and finds space near the top for some longtime RS favorites. Their top ten rounds out like this:

10. Neil Young and Crazy Horse, Psychedelic Pill
9. Japandroids, Celebration Rock
8. Green Day, !Uno!
7. Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, Here
6. Kendrick Lamar, good kid, m.A.A.d city
5. Fiona Apple, The Idler Wheel…
4. Bob Dylan, Tempest
3. Jack White, Blunderbuss
2. Frank Ocean, Channel Orange
1. Bruce Springsteen, Wrecking Ball

Once a beacon of talk radio and jazz interludes, NPR has shed their stodgier image in the past few years by playing host to a slew of great new albums before their release. This year we first listened through some of our favorite albums — The Idler Wheel, Kaleidoscope Dream, Local Business, Shrines — on NPR, and so we’re not at all surprised to find that their Favorite Albums of 2012 list is so extensive as it is. 50 albums deep, their list is unranked and ordered alphabetically, and it includes everything from Ab Soul and Meek Mill to fun. and P!nk to the Vijay Iyer Trio and Cafe Tacvba. Also of course included: Fiona Apple’s The Idler Wheel, Frank Ocean’s Channel Orange, Kendrick Lamar’s Good Kid, m.A.A.d.City, Japandroids Celebration Rock, and Miguel’s Kaleidoscope Dream. (Their 100 Favorite Songs of 2012 list is linked for easy listening and well worth a gander.)

Time magazine is taking it easy this year and only counting their Top 10 Everything. Just kidding, these guys takes year-end seriously, and they have chronicled the year with a heroic 55 lists celebrating everything from Best Fiction Books and Diet Discoveries, Buzzwords and Viral Videos, and New Species and Parenting Trends, and so on. It’s not exactly “Everything” — they must have forgot to hit “publish on their” Best Lil B Tweets list — but a lot! And of course, their Top 10 Songs of 2012 and Top 10 Albums of 2012, which are as follows:

10. Killer Mike, R.A.P. Music
9. Azealia Banks, 1991 EP
8. The Mountain Goats, Transcendental Youth
7.  Various Artists, Listen, Whitey! The Sounds of Black Power 1967-74
6. Swans, The Seer
5. Getatchew Mekuria & the Ex & Friends, Y’Anbessaw Tezeta
4. Dirty Projectors, Swing Lo Magellan
3. Frank Ocean, channel ORANGE
2. Kendrick Lamar, good kid, m.A.A.d city
1. Fiona Apple, The Idler Wheel…

Idolator, a place that spends almost as much time as we do listening to pop music (JK, it’s totally not a competition and we really do love Idolator!), rounds out their year with a list that includes some of the usual suspects — Fiona Apple, Kendrick Lamar, Frank Ocean — as well as some names that are less familiar. Also: had tips to them for counting Carly Rae Jepsen as more than just “Call Me Maybe.” Their 10:

10. Fiona Apple, The Idler Wheel…
9. Carly Rae Jepsen, Kiss
8. Kendrick Lamar, Good Kid, m.A.A.d. City
7. Beach House, Bloom
6. Bright Light Bright Light, Make Me Believe In Love
5. Loreen, Heal
4. Frank Ocean, Channel Orange
3. Jessie Ware, Devotion
2. Taylor Swift, Red
1. Miguel, Kaleidoscope Dream
