You’ll want to know, “Who’s this Midian chick?” after watching the VH1 premiere of the video to her debut single “Bitter.” Her chilling voice is soulful to its core. Vocally she’s a mix between Adele and Christina Aguilera. Those are not comparisons of her artistry as it’s much too early in her career for that. In what may be her breakout song, the R&B singer/songwriter pours her transparency over the soft piano keys and drum beat. “You don’t know how I feel when I see you out with your new girl/And knowing that you don’t love me anymore makes me so bitter.” Vulnerability is a gamble. No one wants to to admit to the feeling of bitterness after a failed relationship, especially when the ex has moved on. But vulnerability can also be relatable.
Before today’s debut the 24-year-old Virginia native got her start in the shower as a little girl. Now she’s all grown up with a single that aired on Love & Hip-Hop Atlanta this year. Her story hasn’t been all roses though. A few years ago the soulful singer moved to LA to record music only to find a number of record labels offering her a deal, but with one condition: She change who she really was as a singer. She remembers being told to “go more the Katy Perry direction” and that she’d be instantly signed if she’d “go more pop” and do a “Fergie type of thing.” Unwilling to transform her rhythm and blues sound into pop Midian, held her ground.
Her relentless belief in the music she wanted to create led to her song accruing a quarter of a million YouTube views within a month, and of course the coveted placement on one of VH1’s most successful reality shows. Whether the song was born from a hurtful experience or her imagination, Midian’s soon-to-be takeoff in the music industry is nothing to be “Bitter” about.
