When Hip-Hop And Classic Literature Meet: Jay-Z Confirmed To Score Baz Luhrmann’s Adaptation Of The Great Gatsby

When it comes to creating a soundtrack to a classic such as The Great Gasby one must call on an artist with a level of musical genius. Director Baz Luhrmann already featured Watch The Throne’s “No Church in the Wild” and listened to Jay-Z on-set as motivation. The next step then doesn’t seem as much of a shock. Rumors sparked that Lady Gaga and Prince would contribute to the project’s soundtrack, but no other information had been confirmed. That was until a tweet from producer Jeymes Samuel of The Bullitts.

On the night before New Year’s Eve Samuel tweeted, “Jay-Z and myself have been working tirelessly on the score for the upcoming #CLASSIC The Great Gatsby! It is too DOPE for words!” A hip-hop mesh with F.Scott Fitgerald’s adaptation may end up being musical greatness. The Film Stage reports Craig Armstrong as being currently credited with the score for the upcoming film, which means it’s unclear how much involvement Jay-Z  has.

Jay makes epic moves in silence. Since Luhrman’s Moulin Rouge soundtrack was filled with modern remakes it makes perfect sense that he’d want Hov to cook up something his latest flick. Whoever thought that hip-hop would take it this far? No, really. Check out the trailer for The Great Gasby below.
