After tricking us with a Twitter stunt last week, Justin Timberlake dropped his latest musical offering just before midnight on Monday, catching the lingering Golden Globes crowd on Twitter just in time to launch an onslaught of mixed reactions about his decision to make music his priority once again. Like Destiny’s Child‘s latest song “Nuclear”, Timberlake’s new song “Suit and Tie” didn’t instantly grab us and transport us to a world of magical Timbaland beats and inventive blends of pop, R&B and soul, but it is a welcomed return filled with slick grooves and familiar musings on style, sex and having a good time.
After a brief and slightly jarring intro reminiscent of Three Six Mafia‘s contribution to “Chop Me Up,” JT dives in with his falsetto, furthering the sound we love from Usher and Frank Ocean in 2012, with enough similarities to the effortlessly mood-setting sounds of Robin Thicke that Alan’s son was trending worldwide shortly after its release. It also allows him the opportunity to boss Jay-Z around (“get out ya seat, Hov”), which doesn’t happen too often. “Suit and Tie” is currently available on iTunes and MySpace (of course). You can listen to the song in full here.
We agree with Idolator‘s Carl Williott in that after such a long wait filled with false hope and less than satisfying film roles, we’re unsure of that what exactly it is that we want from JT. And even so, we also understand that any musical output from him better than nothing at all. (Raise your hand if you’ve listened to FreeSol…) But it doesn’t stop there! Fortunately for our ears, “Suit and Tie” is not simply a one-off that hopes to squash chatter about how Timberlake’s acting ambitions outweigh his talent but part of a larger project that will ultimately result in the 31-year-old’s third solo album, The 20/20 Experience. Allow him to explain:
This year is an exciting one for me. As you probably have heard through the “grapevine,” I’m gearing up for a big 2013.
Back in June of last year, I quietly started working on what is now, my next journey with that thing I love called MUSIC.
The inspiration for this really came out of the blue and to be honest, I didn’t expect anything out of it. I just went into the studio and started playing around with some sounds and songs. It was probably the best time I’ve had in my career… Just creating with no rules and/or end goal in mind and really enjoying the process.
What I came up with is something I couldn’t be more excited about! It is full of inspiration that I grew up listening to and some newfound muses that I’ve discovered along the way.
“Newfound muses,” eh? We’ll put our money on the tech community, Clint Eastwood and married life. Get ready for some ballads about the boring beauty of Jessica Biel!
