Of all the Nicki Minaj beefs that have been left on the fire over the last few years, this one is both laughable and disconcerting: Minaj has parted ways with her longtime hairstylist, Terrence Davidson. Colorful and constantly changing, Nicki’s hair has been a conversation piece when other subjects, like her lyrical ability and sizable behind, became exhaustive. The ease with which she transitioned from pink to green to bright blonde–in one video!–gave hope to little girls who grew up with unruly curls and spent the better part of their 20s being depressed by the theories of Patti Stanger. But with a new year comes new opportunities and new challenges, and we will get through this time of uncertainty (i.e. not knowing what to expect from Nicki’s hair as she preps for live television) together, friends.
While there is most certainly a history of less than amicable splits/abuse between celebrities and those on their payroll, we’ve yet to hear word about any backstage brawls between these two, or any inappropriate usage of hot curling irons. Obviously to a wig stylist, Nicki is the ultimate blank canvas, but Davidson sites “creative differences” as the reason for their split. “It has been an amazing experience offering me a chance to express my creativity and exhibit my love for the art form of wig design,” he said in a statement released last week.
Because we don’t know what way Nicki will go with her tresses–cornrows in honor of Justin Timberlake’s return?–in these post-Terence days, let’s take a moment to reflect on her past wig colors and styles.
Move it, football head!
We wish the best for Terrence on his future endeavors, and offer Nicki our sincerest condolences during this time of need. We can only hope that her Twitter Barbz can refer her a talented and patient stylist in the interim.
Reminder: Nicki, Mariah Carey and Keith Urban will all make their prime-time debuts on American Idol tonight at 8 p.m. EST on FOX. We’re obviously tuning in to analyze the body language of both Nicki and Mariah, but we’re not giving up hope that Keith is up for a catfight, but if nothing else he has a great head of hair.
