The 17-year-old Lorde is, beyond a shadow of a doubt, the biggest breakout music star of the year 2013. She was named a VH1 You Oughta Know artist in September of this year, her song “Royals” has spent six weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100, and her debut album Pure Heroine will no doubt be showing up on many year-end Top 10 lists. As much vocal and lyrical promise as she has shown, though, we had NO idea that she could wail until we discovered this video of her at age 12 singing a Ronnie James Dio classic (via our friends over at Crushable)!
Of course, any metal fan worth his or her salt already knows that Ronnie James Dio first garnered popular acclaim NOT as the frontman of Black Sabbath, but rather as the lead singer of a psychedelic rock band called Rainbow. That band’s debut album, Richie Blackmore’s Rainbow, was led off by the legendary 1975 song “Man On The Silver Mountain,” a track that features riffs even sludgier than a mudslide. Despite the fact that she wasn’t born until 1996, this is the track that a then-12-year-old Ella Maria Lani Yelich-O’Connor (aka Lorde) decided to cover with her band “Extreme” at a Battle Of The Bands contest in her native New Zealand. (For you Lorde superfans out there, there’s also a cute interview with her at 7:58 of the video above.)
Of course, no one can hold a candle to the ferocious screams and yelps of the one and only RJD, but we have to say that Lorde’s ability to belt out this hard rock classic definitely bodes well for her future career. Once she gets done working through her teenage angst, we’d love to see her evolve into a metal goddess!
