You Oughta Know In Concert: Lorde Shows Us Why She’s Queen Bee

Lorde has risen to the ranks of pop royalty in these last few months with her uber-catchy single “Royals,” and her performance at You Oughta Know In Concert proves that she’s no pretender to the throne! The 17-year-old New Zealander held her own among the senior singers, making her four-song set an undisputed highlight of the high-octane evening. And don’t get us started on her spellbinding collaboration with HAIM later that night on Sheryl Crow‘s “Strong Enough”…

Lorde opened her set with “Bravado,” a deep cut from her 2012 EP The Love Club. Her husky voice effortlessly scaled to delicate and airy heights as her body swayed, possessed by the music. Raw emotion drips from every line as she spits out lyrics like spells with a witchy wave of her hand.

Next up came “Buzzcut Season,” a lament for warmer days “where everything is good,” a sort of companion piece to Death Cab For Cutie‘s modern classic, “Summer Skin.” The song appears on her debut album, Pure Heroine, as does her next number, “Team.” The latter is Lorde’s latest single, and its slinky synths are already taking aim at the Top 40. And, of course, she capped things off with a killer rendition of “Royals”, reminding us all why she’s the untouchable Queen Bee.
