Glee star Lea Michele is the latest television actor to release original music. We’ve been down this road with our favorite TV stars before, but working on a show so heavily rooted in performance, and having Broadway experience, makes her one of the best-suited actors to step into the booth. Her songs have already hit the top of the charts; now it’s up to Lea and her collaborators to create some original smash hits.
So how did Lea manage to juggle a packed Glee production schedule and recording sessions–not to mention album promo, photo shoots with Terry Richardson and a tragic personal loss last year? Superhuman powers, natch. And she’s not the only television star who has dabbled in music while his or her show was in its prime. Jennifer Love Hewitt released two albums while Party of Five was on the air and Selena Gomez recruited her band the Scene for three full-length LPs during the Wizard of Waverly Place run. Even Joey Lawrence–whoa!–capitalized on his many talents and teen heartthrob status during Blossom by releasing a self-titled album in 1993. Laugh all you want, but those acid wash jeans and exposed chest bring us right back to the days before Snapchat. (A much safer time, right?) Plus, “Nothin’ My Love Can’t Fix” feels deliciously vintage all on its own; those dated fashions are just icing on the cake. Of course it’s easy to scoff at any actor who attempts to make music, or any famous, fabulously wealthy person who momentarily looks normal when moving out of their comfort zone. It’s much harder to accept the some of these kings and queens of the small screen are responsible for tracks featured on our Most Played lists. These artists aren’t necessarily being groomed for the Grammys, but we can all admit that “Stars Are Blind” gets better with age.
