Fans of extreme heavy metal are mourning the death yesterday of Gwar singer and creative figurehead Dave Brockie who in the guise of Oderus Urungus showered audiences with (fake) blood, guts and profanity and entertained them with his band’s over-the-top prop-ladden stage shows and high-velocity music. Formed in 1984 in Richmond, Virginia from the ashes of hardcore band Death Piggy and creative misfits from Virginia Commonwealth University, the band filled clubs with Kiss-level theatricality including grotesque costumes, giant props and loads of fake blood which Brockie took pleasure in spraying audiences with. The band’s recent albums was Battle Maximus which came out on Metal Blade Records in 2013. Police were summoned to Brockie’s apartment Sunday, March 23rd when he was found by his roommates. The cause of death is not known but a full autopsy will be performed.
