After 18 Years, We Know The Words To “Always Be My Baby” Better Than Mariah Carey Does

Mariah Carey kicked off Today‘s Summer Concert Series on Rockefeller Plaza this morning. And in Grand Mariah Fashion, it was a spectacle, complete with elbow-length gloves and grand pianos. But wait, is it appropriate to channel ’50s lounge singers and drape yourself atop a baby grand before 10 AM? Who cares! Mimi makes her own rules.

In addition to performing “You Don’t Know What To Do,” a new track from upcoming album Me. I am Mariah… The Elusive Chanteuse (out on May 27) featuring Wale, Mariah took the televised opportunity to celebrate one of her classics: “Always Be My Baby.” The Daydream hit reached No. 1 on the Billboard charts 18 years ago, so it was an anniversary of sorts. And who hasn’t attempted the harrowing vocal runs in the chorus during karaoke, or envisioned a stress-free life swinging from a tree with your one true love? Just because “Always Be My Baby” is a staple in her repertoire doesn’t mean she hasn’t forgotten some of the words. Along with acknowledging all the dahlings in the audience and at home, Mariah remixed the track as only she can: “Messing up the words to my own song/And I don’t care.” Never. Change. Mariah. We wouldn’t know what to do with ourselves if you were suddenly a mini-van driving mom shuttling Dem Babies from Target to California Pizza Kitchen.
