With a history of summertime smashes, we’ve been itching for new music from Nicki Minaj ever since the days started to grow longer. Yes, she made the jump to the big screen in The Other Woman, but Nicki was never going to leave music for good, Barbz.
“Pills N Potions,” the first single off forthcoming album The Pinkprint, was released to iTunes this morning. “Super Bass” and “Starships” proved Nicki knows how to rock a light-hearted party anthem, but “Potions” is a heartfelt ballad that positions Nicki’s vocals in a new light. Rather than rely on an supersized amount of auto-tune, Nicki’s voice sounds both pure and vulnerable as she makes her way through her conflicted feelings. In effort to cater to both of her fan bases, the song marries Nicki’s singing with her confident rapping, delivering a fiery message to the one she can’t shake (“Ayo, they could never make me hate you/Even though what you was doing wasn’t tasteful/Even though you out here lookin’ so ungrateful/I’mma keep it movin’ be classy and graceful”).
The song is co-written by Ester Dean (“Super Bass”) and produced by Dr. Luke, whose catalogs of hits speak for themselves. It’s also a surprisingly personal track from the hip-hop chameleon, who has more alter egos and personalities than we have empty coffee cups at our desk. With Beyoncé likely laying low until her On The Run tour kicks off, and Rihanna doing anything but music while wearing a pink wig (that may or may not have belonged to Nicki), this is your favorite Barbie’s time to make her grand return to the game.
