Sam Smith Gives Us All The Details About The Making Of Debut Album In The Lonely Hour

by (@emilyexton)

Happy Sam Smith day! Our You Oughta Know artist‘s debut album, In The Lonely Hour, is finally out here in the United States, and we’re lucky enough to have Sam guide us through his brand-new release, track-by-track.

From current single “Stay With Me” to “Lay Me Down” — the song that started it all — Sam reveals the inspiration behind his 10 tracks, as well as the obstacles he overcame while creating the album with producers like Eg White and Fraser T. Smith. For instance, while recording “I’ve Told You Now” he was actually suffering from tonsillitis and followed up his studio session with a hospital stay. “If you listen to the song you can hear my voice is falling apart on the track,” Sam says. On “I’m Not The Only One,” he takes on the female perspective, flipping the script while observing relationships around him. “I’ve never been in a relationship, and I’ve seen relationships my whole life,” he explains. Taking on a different perspective during the creative process was easier than expected. “It was tough, but this song actually, more than any other song on the album, flowed very, very quickly. The lyrics just flowed out.” Learn more about the making of his big debut and Sam’s fondness for life’s little imperfections, in the video above.
