Independence Day festivities are on the horizon this week but if you need an excuse to start partying early hoist a Moosehead Lager your nearest Canadian for today, July 1st, is Canada Day! The holiday celebrates the union of Britain’s remaining North American colonies in 1867 into the nation we all now know and love as Canada. The differences between the U.S.A. and our neighbors to the North are relatively few, and among the many commonalities is our love for loud and raucous punk heavy metal rock n’ roll. Canada’s hard rock tradition goes back to the ‘60s and bands like The Guess Who and Steppenwolf singer John Kay, through to the ‘70s and bands like Bachman-Turner Overdrive, Pat Travers and the mighty Rush, punk pioneers The Viletones and D.O.A., ‘80s progressive thrashers Voivod and up the present day with Danko Jones and Black Mountain among many others. In honor of Canada Day let’s count down 10 of the heaviest and most important acts in Canadian hard rock history, be they metal, punk or otherwise.

Hear Canadian rock greats Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson of Rush talk about their groundbreaking documentary Rush: Beyond the Lighted Stage.
