With the addition of Best Lyric Video — yes we are awarding these now — we were reminded that several awards categories have made their way in (and quickly out) of the MTV Video Music Awards. The discontinuation of Best R&B Video and Best Rap Video in favor of the generic Best Hip-Hop Video has been slightly disappointing, but we’re not here to split hairs. While some awards are sadly missed, there are some that are truly head scratching. For example, remember Best Artist Website and Ringtone of the Year?

Despite it’s semi-ambiguous title, we were big fans of Breakthrough Video. The category was awarded at the height of the music video and represented advances in art and direction of what entertainers could do on the small screen. Past winners of the award include landmark videos, such as “Virtual Insanity” by Jamiroquai, “Weapons of Choice” by Fatboy Slim, “Fell in Love with a Girl” by The White Stripes, and “Tonight, Tonight” by The Smashing Pumpkins.
