Admit it; this is the moment you cleared your diary for. We know we did, so in the grand tradition of a climax to suspense, may we request a drum roll, please… And here it is! Katy Perry‘s highly anticipated video for her new single off Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection, “Part Of Me.” The song itself is a pure pop girl power anthem in a way we’re fairly nostalgic about, and the video takes feminine strength to all new extremes. After exposing her philandering boyfriend, a very sweet looking Katy sees an advertisement for the marines — at which point she goes all Empire Records and cuts off all her hair. The rest of the video is a montage of Katy doing drills in the army; from obstacle courses to shooting guns to bayoneting dummies, the video has it all. And there’s no need to take it literally, as we get the impression that Katy is talking to a metaphor as scenes cut between her old self bathing and her new army self submerged in water. The video is hopefully — it tells us that heartbreak doesn’t need to ruin us. It can be the thing that makes us stronger.

Watch Janelle Monae Cover Jimi Hendrix’s “Little Wing”
Janelle Monae played a truly sexy, sultry cover of Jimi Hendrix’s “Little Wing” at her concert last night in Papantla, Mexcio. And despite the fan made hand held phone footage, it’s easy to see how wonderfully Monae performed the iconic song, and that you would have had chills coursing down your spine had you seen it live. Jack White has gone solo this year and we’ve loved the first single, “Love Interruption”, from his forthcoming album Blunderbuss. But for some reason Jack’s unaccompanied debut has set off some rumors that The White Stripes, who broke up almost 14 months ago, will be reuniting. But Jack quickly put a end to whispers in an interview with NME magazine, saying that there’s “Absolutely no chance” that the White Stripes would be getting back together.
He went on to say, “I couldn’t see any reason to ever do that. I’m not the kind of person that would retire from baseball and come out of retirement the next year. I mean, if we went to all the trouble of telling people we’re done, we meant it, you know? If we were forced to change our mind about that, I can only imagine being the reason, like if for some reason we went bankrupt or something or needed the cash, which would be a really sad thing, I would probably be issuing an apology along with the announcement of the show dates!” While we’re a little bummed to hear The Stripes won’t be back, we’ve got more that enough excitement for Jack’s solo effort that we think we can deal!
Last week we gave you five reasons why you must know UK boy-band One Direction right this second, and here’s another reason: their debut album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 album chart, making them the first British band to ever do so. Their album, Up All Night, has sold 176,000 copies and has officially made history with its number one entry onto the charts. Until now, the highest debut entry for a debut album was the Spice Girls’ Spice, which entered the chart at number six in 1997. If the Spice Girls subsequent worldwide success is anything to go by, then we can only deduce that there’s only one direction for pop music to take this year (sorry we couldn’t help ourselves!). Could One Direction be to 2012 what Adele was to 2011?

Our You Oughta Know artist Gotye has taken America completely by storm on the strength of one song — “Somebody That I Used To Know” — so as you can imagine we are excited to see what will happen as more of his singles start dropping in the States (we can only imagine more Gotye songs will equal more Gotye dominance). And now it appears Gotye is the latest buzz artist to be invited to perform on Saturday Night Live after Lana Del Rey and Sleigh Bells both graced the hallowed stage earlier this year. The SNL episode will air on April 14th and marks Gotye’s SNL debut. We wonder if he’ll take Kimbra along to perform “Somebody That I Used To Know,” or if he’ll play something entirely different. And if he does play “Somebody,” what will be the second track he’ll chose to play off his critically acclaimed album, Making Mirrors.

Behind The Music is taking a look at the complex life of hip hop artist Game. In this exclusive sneak peek, you can get an idea of where the artist came from, and where he’s going. In the opening scenes of the sneak, Game proposes to his girlfriend at the school she works at, and says he’s growing out of his tumultuous past; “Day by day I have altered my lifestyle into who I am now… A better person, a better friend, a better father, a better everything.” Including interviews with his abusive father and abused mother, the sneak paints a pretty bleak picture of Game’s childhood. The story is absolutely heart wrenching, and Game’s story is a complete tear jerker, and filled with pain and sadness. Covering his dangerous teenage years, the documentary would be much more difficult to watch if we didn’t already know there was a happy ending for Game, who found his way through the chaos of his gang life, including his violent beef with 50 Cent, to forge a successful career as an artist. You can check out the promo trailer after the jump.
Be sure to tune in to Behind The Music on Thursday, March 22nd at 9/8c on VH1.
In a literally explosive show, KISS took to the stage to rock out “Detroit Rock City” on Jimmy Kimmel Live. Proving that glam rock has no age, the guys stormed the stage in full make up and costume, and gave a high energy, tongue wagging performance that culminated in the very rock and roll destruction of a guitar. With flames engulfing the stage throughout the show as explosions and flashing lights abounded, the performance was met with roaring applause from an enthusiastic, face-painted audience.

Drake Freestyles For GQ
Drake‘s freestyle (and style!) is impeccable in this sparsely shot video for GQ. Say what you want about Drake — the guy’s got some serious talent when it comes to his art (and he’s a little bit cute too!). [Idolator]
The prolific and often zany Tweeter (rapper by trade) 50 Cent dropped a bombshell for fans this morning, promising a July release date for his forthcoming album via the social networking device. 50 Tweeted:
The album is his fifth studio effort, and no doubt is even more highly anticipated following his appearance at SXSW last week where he played 2003′s Get Rich or Die Tryin’ along with guest Eminem. We’re breathing a sigh of releif that the album is finally on it’s way, especially since 50 seemed to have some set backs with his label late last year.

Today in weirdsies: Marilyn Manson and Johnny Depp have teamed up to do a duet of Carly Simon‘s iconic song, “You’re So Vain.” The track will be on Manson’s forthcoming new album, Born Villain, due May 1st and we’re interested to see how the quirky yet unlikely pairing interpret the track. Can we look forward to a hyper-goth, twisted-electro version of the track? Or maybe some pure rock and roll? Or perhaps they’ll stay true to the original and play it with Simon’s original style?
You might also be surprised to note that Deep has a rich history of musical collaborations with huge stars, including playing guitar on Oasis‘ “Fade In-Out” and “Fade Away; playing guitar for the soundtracks of his movies Chocolat and Once Upon a Time in Mexico; appearing on Shane MacGowan‘s first solo album; as part of a band called P; as well as starring in Tom Petty‘s video for “Into The Great Wide Open”, The Lemonheads “It’s a Shame About Ray” video and Avril Lavigne‘s “Alice” video. And as for his pairing up with Manson, the coupling apparently isn’t so unlikely, with Manson having attended 3 of Depp’s recent movie premiers and even contributed “The Nobodies” to the From Hell soundtrack. Huh. Who woulda thunk it?
