VH1 Top 20 Video Countdown‘s Jim Shearer bumped into Olympic snowboarder Shaun White on the top of VH1′s Times Square headquarters yesterday post his Big Morning Buzz Live interview. Sport talk out of the way, Shearer and White got down to music business, imagining up a bill for the festival of White’s dreams. “The cool people are dead,” White said, before inviting his friends The Black Keys and a reunited White Stripes. And as for hitting the stage himself, he says, “I would just hit one note. I would let it ring, and I’d walk away.” We would show up for that. Would you? Read more…

What Should We Expect From Avril Lavigne And Chad Kroeger’s Marriage?

Surely you’ve heard by now, but for those who have missed today’s big news: Avril Lavigne and Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger have gone and gotten engaged. Which, well, “What The Hell”? According to People magazine, the two met last February when they got together to co-write a song for Lavigne’s upcoming fifth studio album.  Plenty of relationships have started like this, Avril’s first marriage to Sum 41‘s Deryck Whibley included. But that made sense: the king and queen of mall-punk, united in pop derelictions and eye liner. Avril and Chad’s collaboration — neither nuptial nor musical — we can’t say we saw coming. Together they’ll share an enormous combined audience, and so probably their meeting was destined by the radio gods. But otherwise? Read more…

Fun. And Flo Rida Rock The Do Something! Awards With Their Songs Of The Summer

Live over the weekend (and again last night for those tuning in from home), .fun treated the much deserved do-gooders at the Do Something! Awards to a performance of their smash hit and Song of the Summer contender “Some Nights.” fun. is always fun to watch, because Nate Ruess tends to bounce around like the stage is charged. This performance was extra thrilling, though, because they they are straight allies for gay rights, and so they stripped the song’s usual effects and distortion and brought in the Gay Men’s Chorus of Los Angeles to help instead. We have to imagine that the Do Something! Awards was not one of those “some nights” where they have to ask, “What do I stand for? What do I stand for?”

Also that night, Flo Rida returned to the stage for a second time to perform his seductive and chart topping other Song of the Summer bid, “Whistle.” He wore the same community service ready cargo pants, with him the same dancers behind him,  the same blinged out mic in hand, and most importantly, with all the same good energy. Watch that performance below, and if you missed “Wild Ones,” you should check that out here! Read more…

Idol Rumor Mills Keep Churning: Mariah Carey Is Mad About Nicki, Kanye West Enters Talks

Remember when American Idol made stars? These days, it seems like the singing competition portion of the show is just reason to keep a judges’ table, stocked full with top shelf celebrities. Yesterday we reported that US Weekly‘s got good word from a source that Nicki Minaj has been tapped as a judge for the upcoming season of American Idol. Minaj allegedly turned down a similar gig already, but now with Mariah Carey on board, and with Britney Spears on The X Factor and Christina Aguilera on The Voice, who could blame her for wanting in on the fun?

Well, today TMZ reports that Carey is not down with the idea, and that she “hung up the phone when she was told Nicki was the candidate” because she was under the impression that she alone would fill the season’s diva quota. Meanwhile, TMZ is also reporting that Idol execs have reached out to yet another potential celeb-judge: Kanye West, who is apparently “on the fence” because “he’s not sure if Idol is in his wheelhouse.” Though he’s not a woman like Minaj, we can’t imagine Carey being much more receptive to that Kanye call. TMZ will probably keep us posted. Read more…

Go Behind-The-Scenes: VH1 Top 20 Video Countdown‘s Jim Shearer Talks Pancakes With Walk The Moon

Being the serious Walk The Moon fan that he is, VH1 Top 20 Video Countdown‘s Jim Shearer made sure to waste not a moment with the boys while they were at VH1 headquarters yesterday. With a camera in hand and a long list of tough questions at ready, he followed the boys into the men’s bathroom to catch their pre-Big Morning Buzz Live warm-up and then to the green room for some serious breakfast talk. And as it turns out, Walk The Moon do not believe in pancakes.

“I don’t think we are an anti-pancake band, I just don’t think we are a pancake enthusiast band,” Nick offered. Meanwhile, Sean was less diplomatic, suggesting instead that, “[Pancakes] are sent from the devil.” And as for Kevin, he likes waffles. The more you know! Read more…

Taylor Swift Will “Never Ever” Live For The First Time At The VMAs

Already, “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together,” the lead single off of Taylor Swift’s forthcoming Red, has climbed the Billboard 100, broken sales records, and become the anthem of strong-willed girls nationwide. And now, we get word that Taylor will give it the big-stage, live debut it deserves next month at the MTV Video Music Awards! There, she’ll be joining Green Day, One Direction, P!nk and Alicia Keys, which means all three of our strong, VH1 Storytelling women will be representing!

Taylor VMA appearances past have been nothing if not memorable, as she was the first country music star to win the award and of course there was that “I’ma let you finish” moment that so famously followed. And if Taylor’s hair-flipping and finger-wagging lip-synch of “Never Ever” is any indication, this performance too will be a show to be seen. So if you haven’t already, now would be a good time to mark your calenders: September 6 at 8 PM. We-eeeee!

Walk The Moon Walk The “Tightrope” On VH1′s Big Morning Buzz Live

Walk The Moon swung back by VH1 headquarters yesterday, to announce their September You Oughta Know gig and book-ending the summer with a Big Morning Buzz Live performance. A lot has happened since we first met the boys from Cincinnati in June — they’ve celebrated their eponymous label debut, toured Europe, and won hearts and sound-tracked the hot months with their song of the summer, “Anna Sun” — and, now with September and their month of You Oughta Know upon us, they are only just getting started!

They showed up yesterday with just acoustic guitars and suitcases, and with Nick wearing again a Navajo print shirt (can’t fix what’s not broken), to bang out their quick-stepping next single, “Tightrope.” All warmed up, they then shipped off to get ready for their You Oughta Know Live session. More on that soon! Because if you don’t know Walk The Moon yet, we think you really oughta.

Tuned In: Train Find “50 Ways To Say Goodbye” On Letterman

Last night, Train pulled into the Late Show with David Letterman to perform “50 Ways To Say Goodbye,” the newest single off of California 37. And “50 Ways To Say Goodbye,” it turns out, is more or less the opposite Paul Simon‘s “50 Ways To Leave A Lover,” a cool list of ways to end a relationship. Rather, “50 Ways To Say Goodbye” is a goofy and mariachi-tinged catalog of lies to tell your friends after you’ve been dumped.

“That’s cool, but if my friends as where you are I am going to say,” goes the refrain, which is followed by a long list of excuses that range from maybe reasonable (“danced to death at an east side night club”) to Final Destination cribbed (“fried getting suntanned”) to hilarious (“How could you leave on Yom Kippur?”) to probably sponsored by the Nissan Cube (“Got run over by a crappy purple Scion”). It’s silly but fun, especially when the big chorus hits. Train performed it last night with a full brass and plenty of flare, and Pat Monhan stayed cool and confident, even while he sang things like, “She’ll think I’m Superman, not super minivan.” Recently heartbroken? You might want to take notes.

Tuned In: Beyonce Leaves Her Footprint With Powerful “I Was Here” Performance At The UN

Yesterday was the first-ever World Humanitarian Day, how did you celebrate? As previously announced, Beyonce teamed up with the United Nations and humanitarian aid organizations to launch a global campaign to celebrate the day and to encourage people worldwide to get involved. For her part, she released this video of her powerful performance of “I Was Here,” as filmed live last month at the United Nations’ General Assembly Hall.

Looking glamorous in a glittering white gown, she sang the 4 track like the whole world might vibrate with her declarations of “I did”‘s and “I done”‘s. Even she was dwarfed, though, by a montage of recent humanitarian efforts playing on the towering, IMAX-proportion screen behind her, because the day was not meant to be hers alone.

Speaking with Anderson Cooper last week, she explained that, “I feel like we all have our purpose and we all have our strengths; and I don’t know if it’s selfish or unselfish, but it feels so wonderful to do something for someone else. And I think for the UN to want to include the whole world was something important, and that’s what I represent.” Did you do something to leave a foot print?
