The American Music Awards are to the Grammy Awards what the Golden Globes are to the Oscars — they’re slightly looser, filled with more frivolity and slightly less consequential in the grand scheme of things. However, when it comes to generating viral moments, score one for the producers of the AMAs.
Tonight’s show opened with Nicki Minaj performing her a medley of her song with David Guetta, “Turn Me On,” and her 2011 Song Of The Summer contender, “Super Bass.” While she was performing, someone in the truck noticed that Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez were rapping along to the song in the crowd and wisely cut to that shot, which we have for you above courtesy of @mattchew03.

The first question you’re probably asking is “Who’s going to be the lead singer?” Van Hagar fans, you can stop reading now, for we’ve got some bad news: It appears that Eddie Van Halen and David Lee Roth have buried the proverbial hatchet and are ready to once again make music together. The two famously split twenty-five-plus years ago after ego clashes occurred in the wake of the massive worldwide success of 1984, and a brief reunion in 1996 also ended in acrimony. That said, the band—minus original bassist Michael Anthony—appeared to be all smiles in the reunion photo you see above, and the band is reportedly set to make a “special announcement” on November 30 at the Grammy Awards nominations concert in L.A. We’ll have more details for you as soon as they become available, but in the interim, we hope that Diamond Dave starts limbering up now and practicing his patented karate kicks.
TMZ is reporting that Bonnie Pointer, one of the founding members of the famed Pointer Sisters singing group, was arrested in Los Angeles last night on drug possession charges. According to their report, the 61-year-old Pointer was pinched by the LAPD just after midnight last night for felony possession of a controlled substance. There are no details at this moment about what the controlled substance was, but we can only hope that it wasn’t a fistful of phentermine. After all, we all know what the combination of Pointer Sisters melodies and an excessive intake of diet pills did to Saved By The Bell‘s Jessie Spano.

It’s just over a month until VH1 DIVAS Celebrates Soul airs on VH1, and we’re already doing backflips of excitement about this year’s lineup, which will feature Mary J. Blige, Jill Scott, Florence + The Machine, Kelly Clarkson, Jessie J and Jennifer Hudson. Regarding the latter, we’re excited to reveal this new promo image of the Grammy- and Oscar-winning singer/actress J. Hud! We haven’t heard any advance word about what songs she’s planning on performing that night, but seeing as how one of the featured soul-music capitals we’ll be spotlighting is her hometown of Chicago, we’re sure she’s got some exciting tricks up her sleeve about how to best honor the rich musical legacy of the Windy City.
Be sure to come on back to VH1.com this evening at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT when we reveal the full VH1 Unplugged: Kelly Clarkson set. And don’t forget to set your DVRs to record VH1 at 11 p.m. ET/PT tomorrow night to see this truly amazing Unplugged performance in glorious high-definition.
So, will the gamut work? Quite frankly, the road to #1 looks pretty daunting at this point. The song is currently sitting at #18 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and will have to find a way to eclipse heavy hitters like Rihanna‘s “We Found Love,” Adele’s weepy “Someone Like You,” and the red-hot David Guetta/Usher collabo “Without You” over the next few weeks to hit the top spot (not to mention Lady Gaga‘s “Marry The Night,” which promises to be a huge hit during the holidays). Additionally, the song does not benefit from its striking sonic similarities to Ke$ha‘s “Animal”; the choruses of both of these songs share virtually the same melody, and the vocal inflections of Katy and Ke$ha are also remarkably similar, which makes sense considering that Lukasz “Dr. Luke” Gottwald was a credited writer on both tracks. Nor does it benefit from covering the same thematic territory as the aforementioned “Someone Like You” in an arguably less emotionally resonant fashion.
VH1 Unplugged: Kelly Clarkson makes its highly anticipated premiere exclusively on VH1.com this Thursday night, November 17, at 7 p.m. ET. We’ve already told you how stunning Kelly looked when this show taped back in late October, and if you caught her cover of Carrie Underwood’s “I Know You Won’t” when we premiered it last week, you have an idea yourself. However, VH1 photographer Colin Gray just sent us a bunch of the photos that he was able to take that afternoon and we couldn’t resist sharing his insanely awesome work with you (as well as a quick video of Kelly explaining why she didn’t perform barefoot, like she usually does, while taping VH1 Unplugged). Enjoy!
