Caution: Rocking is Hazardous to Your Health
They need to start doing some sort of first aid tent. I’m hobbling right now. Of course a Mutemath show is a finely tuned ballet and I pride myself on that, but every now and then something goes wrong, and my God did I smash into something last night. Both my feet are throbbing. The roofs of my feet are killing me.

Austin Translation: Stars of Track and Field @ SXSW

Couldn’t make it to South By Southwest? Not to worry — we’ve got reports from the frontlines of the year’s premiere music festival. Stars of Track and Field’s drummer Dan Orvik fills us in.

It can get violent on stage…
We played five shows in 48 hours. It’s been f*cking crazy, we’re on our way to our sixth show right now. We’re borrowing a lot of gear — you have ten minute changeovers so you go with the house kit. Yesterday I played a show and we’re playing one of our big rock songs and there’s the kick drum pedal, it has a big felt beater on it, and right in the middle of the biggest part of the song it flew off. This is stuff that wouldn’t happen on my kit. I picked it up and threw it at [guitarist] Jason [Bell], because it’s important to me that he knew. I didn’t want to be a wet rag but it was my little way of trying to deal with it.

Rock Stars and In-Laws?
We saw Amy from Stars, she was on the same flight from Phoenix, so that was nice. It was so late when we got in last night, and we were so hungry, we didn’t go into the fray. Almost certainly we’ll bump into people we know. Also I’ve got family here, in-laws.

CSI Xtina, Harley rocks G n’R Track

Xtina Christina Aguilera will appear on an episode of CSI. Finally that script for "Genie in a Forensics Lab" will see the light of day.

Remember that Guns n’ Roses leak last month off the glacial Chinese Democracy? Harley Davidson’s responsible for that, as well as the whole "yuppification of biker culture" thing.

Goodnight Tampa! The Who curtailed their Florida show last night due to lead singer Roger Daltrey’s ill pipes after one song. There’s a "A Quick One While He’s Away" joke here, I’m sure.

Stipe in the Studio, Spoon in the Summer

Stipe R.E.M. return to the studio with Bloc Party producer Jacknife Lee, hoping to capture some of the Brit band’s chart thunder, on their first album in three years.

Pop juggernauts Maroon 5 trade up labels and plan a May release for their latest It Won’t Be Soon Before Long.

Austin’s own Spoon have finished the follow-up to 2005′s Gimme Fiction, and are eyeing a July release for the as-yet-untitled record.

Blues Traveler = Gun Runner?

Popperjohn_1 Blues Traveler frontman John Popper (shown left in a mugshot from a previous arrest) was arrested Wednesday in Washington after his SUV was pulled over for speeding at 111 mph and a cache of weapons was found in "hidden compartments" by some harmonica-loving police dogs. In addition to nine handguns, four rifles, a tazer, a switchblade and night-vision goggles, a small amount of marijuana and drug paraphenalia were found in the car. Popper, who was riding shotgun at the time of the arrest, has made no secret of his gun advocacy and is an avid collector of weaponry, with guns, swords and knives in his collection.

Tour Survival Guide: Razorlight

Razor_x150

Now and then our Tour Survival Guide will check in with rockers about life on the road. Here’s Razorlight’s Andy Burrows talking blisters, bushes and beer.

Real rockers don?t tour without their PJs…
To be honest, we do tend to pass out. Lots of times I wake up with everything on, even the scarf. But even if you?re quite drunk it?s nice to wake up in your pajamas, so we always have them around…

Put down the beer, stay out of the bushes…
The other week in Munich, after too many Heinekens, I jumped into a thorn bush. I messed up my elbow and had to have stitches. My mum rang the next day and there was a big thing in the English tabloids about it. I couldn?t believe that anybody had bothered to write about my elbow.

Hillary, Timbaland to Get “Promiscuous”

Timba_timba
In his most innovative collaboration yet, Timbaland is teaming up with Hillary Rodham Clinton to host a $1,000-a-head benefit for the presidential hopeful. The fundraiser, which will be held on March 31st in Miami, was reported by The Miami Herald. The Timba-approved event is a big win for Clinton, who lost out on some Hollywood backing to Barack Obama, in terms of garnering the youth vote. In addition to the acclaimed rapper-producer, Clinton’s husband will lend some star power to the event.

Dutch of the Penguins

Doherty_250x

No longer satisfied with ruining his own life with drugs, syringe-friendly rocker Pete Doherty has now subjected animals to his rigorous drug regimen. While visiting Cotswolds Wildlife Park with his sometime paramour Kate Moss, Doherty walked the grounds smoking a hand-rolled cigarette filled with an unknown substance. Sources told the Sun UK said Doherty was smoking marijuana and joking "about getting the penguins stoned."

After finishing with his portion, Doherty then flicked the remainder into the Humboldt penguin area, where it was quickly snapped up by one of the park’s residents. A source said that after the animal had ingested it, "it seemed very wobbly." Which is actually not at all dissimilar from how they actually move.

Rage on Parade

Rage_1

So much for a one-off reunion show. After announcing a "one-and-done" stint at this year’s Coachella Music Festival, 90s politico-rock stalwarts Rage Against the Machine announced that they’ll extend the alliance, citing the speed with which tickets sold out, and the prohibitively expensive scalper prices as reasons. Guitarist Tom Morello, formerly of the recently dissolved Audioslave also suggested the reunion was in part to comment on contemporary American politics and rally the youth of America against the current administration.

But don’t line up for the Giants Stadium seats yet — the band will only be adding three shows to the show, all in conjunction with Rock the Bells, an annual hip-hop festival that will find the band playing with the always creative, eight member Wu Tang Clan.

For Limited Time Only:
7/28 Randall’s Island, New York, NY
8/11 NOS Events Center, San Bernadino, CA
8/18 TBD, San Francisco, CA
