You might recognize our You Oughta Know artist Duffy from this week’s charts: the Welsh cutie with the soulful pipes released her debut Rockferry in the States and ended up in the number four spot! See — we’d never lead you astray. If you still haven’t heard her, we’re offering you a free MP3 of her song “Mercy,” which she recorded live at Royal Albert Hall in London. Check it out.
As we informed you a month ago, Queens-born rapper Nas opted to name his upcoming July 1st release N*gger, in a move that shocked the public and polarized the hip-hop community. Many, including his label head, Jay-Z and Al Sharpton, felt compelled to speak out on the title.
Now Nas himself is finally discussing his controversial choice, and possibly changing it. In an interview with MTV, Nas explained the title is still up in the air, given the amount of pressure he’s received from his record label. “Everybody is trying to stop the title….Record stores are gonna have a problem in this day and time selling a record with that title. Who knows what’s gonna turn out and be on that title? Who knows what that title will be?”
In yet another statement issued yesterday, however, Nas sounded even more pressured, and had a cryptic message to convey to his fans: “The people will always know what the real title of this album is and what to call it.”
Last night, the VH1 blog got a sneak listen to the brand new Usher album, Here I Stand (which, starting Tuesday, you all will be able to listen to a full week before it?s release). With his first release in four years, following a baby, babymama and some serious drama, Usher bounces between the polls of undying fidelity and absolute tom-catting, but all of it is quality stuff. Though he?s been away for a minute, the singer let’s us know that he?s still very much a force in R&B. Here?s a track-by-track breakdown of our impressions.
Nick Cannon and Mariah Carey just got hitched, but they’re already planning their next wedding — to one another, natch. Mimi’s been making the rounds chatting about her recent nuptials (she just told Oprah about her “Mrs. Cannon” tat), and today, she’s telling Ellen about the couple’s future plans for…more weddings.
“His plan is to have one [wedding] every year,” Mariah says of her new hubby, which is a great plan if you’re married to the top-selling female recording artist who’s got so much money, she flew her dog first class.
In addition to all those weddings, the couple are also planning on having children. Yesterday, Nick’s half-brother Reuben (who will surely be barred from talking to the press from here on out) said that the couple “definitely wants kids,” but that “both of their careers are crazy right now.” Mariah’s busy being Mariah, and Nick’s busy following her around.
If you spotted Madonna yesterday, you were probably surprised to find her looking a little less energetic than usual. In an uncharacteristic move for the work-out-aholic and mother of three, Madge went out after her triumphant Roseland show and “tied one on” with her evening co-star, Justin Timberlake. “We had to celebrate,” a groggy Madonna told Ryan Seacrest when she called into his morning show. “[We] decided we both work too hard and have to have fun.” Drinks with Justin Timberlake sounds like fun to us. The star reportedly sipped on a martini at her after party at New York’s The Box, then had a shot of tequila and a lemon drop.
This week Coldplay released the cover art for their upcoming album, Viva La Vida, which is just what the chaps have been doing since they were last in the spotlight (hanging with Kanye, living with a fox). In addition to the cover, we also snagged you the track list, which is after the jump. If you want to give their newest single a listen, head to Rhapsody and tell us what you think of “Violet Hill.”
With the spring here, people are coming out of their winter hibernations to greet the world with arms wide. Makeovers are a fairly standard endeavor, and John “He Gets the Joke, Really” Mayer is no different. This morning, Mayer took to his blog to alert his fans and detractors of the remarkable transformation he’ll undergo:
Today I set off on my newest project; to grow and maintain an authentic ’80s style feathered haircut. It’s something I’ve wanted to do for some time…
It’s nice Mayer’s getting to scratch this off his bucket list, while simultaneously stimulating Michael J. Fox’s Yahoo Hot List rating, but one can’t help but wonder what else Mayer could be doing with his time, or on a scale of one to ten, how pleased he is with himself.
A sneak peek of Mariah‘s new video for her next single “Bye Bye” has leaked. In the clip above, we see Mimi hopping the pond for a trip to London. Bonus: the documentary style clip finds her sitting on the lap of a certain rumored fiance.
Not content with being known to the world as a curvaceous, platinum actress, Scarlett Johansson is branching out into the world of singing. For her first album, she’s tackled the Tom Waits songbook, and for the first video, she’s created a bleached out, weary look at a day in the life of a starlet. Fittings, make-up, commercials for something, visiting with author Salman Rushdie and forlornly looking out the window are the action in “Falling Down”….tough life!
Anybody else think this has a Lost in Translation feel to it, except this time she’s the worn-down Bill Murray character?
Before Radiohead embark on their massive world tour in support of their fantastic, industry-revolutionizing In Rainbows, they’ve got a very special evening planned. On May 3rd, VH1 will be airing Radiohead_In Rainbows_From The Basement, an intimate live performance the boys filmed in the studio. In addition to songs from In Rainbows, they’ll also be playing some of your other favorites. Check back on Monday, when we’ll have a sneak peek of what you can expect.
