Tomorrow evening, New York City is honoring hometown girl Mariah Carey by lighting up the Empire State Building lavender, pink and white (of course) to celebrate her latest chart-topping album E=MC2. For the entire weekend, the New York landmark will be lit up to celebrate the number one selling female artist of all time. We got to thinking about some other monuments that could be tweaked to honor Mimi. Take the jump to find out what else should get Mariah’d.
Though Mariah Carey topped the charts this week with her latest E=MC2, she may be feeling the heat from the new batch of talented singers, particularly Leona Lewis, who occupies the number two slot after dominating the charts last week. Mimi?s been asked about the similarities, and as you can see from the photo above, they do bear more than a slight resemblance.
In an interview, Mariah responded to the constant comparisons that have plagued her for the length of her twenty-year career, and also to Ms. Lewis specifically. “Honestly, there has been so many, this is the new her, and I’m like, OK, show me the new her?I’m not particular talking about this girl Leona, because I only heard her once and I didn’t really hear a true similarity, particularly in the style of music.”
Sounds like Ms. Mimi?s a bit defensive there. She went on to say that she prays to lose ?the spirit of jealousy.? We bet knocking Leona out of the chart?s top spot helps with that, but as for her ?no similarity? claim, really, Mariah? Not the hair? Not the young age you both started at, the multi-octave voice or the fact that you came up in difficult circumstances? OK, Mims. Whatever you say.
Janet Jackson never been the type to shy away from a good ol’ chat about sex (heck, she even told us her favorite songs to hypothetically make babies to), so when E! asked her who her girl crush was, Janet seemed eager to answer. Can you guess who the “Feedback” singer would want as her sapphic duet partner? Hint: she’s one of the singers pictured below.

A little while ago, Alicia Keys told Blender magazine that she thought gangsta rap was a tool used by the government: “Gangsta rap was a ploy to convince black people to kill each other,? the singer said. After those remarks enraged many, Keys back-pedaled, saying she was misrepresented in the article, but that’s not stopping 50 Cent from taking aim at Keys.
“That statement changes my perception of Alicia Keys totally,” the rapper is now saying. “But the magazine is standing behind it, which means they probably have a tape of her in conversation saying it. It’s just not really a bright comment anyway.” And in a tactic not employed since 50 left the playground, he added: “If she don’t like that, (then) I don’t like that classical music sh*t she be doing.” So there.
Is the honeymoon already over for Jay-Z and Beyonce? Though the first couple of Hip-Hop haven’t even confirmed they’re married, there might be dark clouds on the horizon. At Jay’s show at the Hollywood Bowl the other night, the rapper had Beyonce’s ’03 hit “Crazy in Love” turned off, just as fans were getting into it. “F*ck that. Sorry Bey but f*ck that – let’s play something else,” the rapper reportedly said to the crowd and his new wife, who up until that point had been standing stage side, cheering on her man.
After Jay stepped off-stage, his new bride laid into him, according to a source at the U.K.’s The Mirror. “She was gesturing wildly and not looking happy. Like any good husband would, Jay-Z groveled and tried to get out of it with compliments.” Sounds like Jay’s 99 problems just hit 100.
Is there anything Madonna can’t do? In the above clip, the Queen of Pop defines the concept of multi-tasking: vacuuming while on the set of her new video, and of course, looking fabulous.

Piano-playing siren Alicia Keys recently opened up to Blender magazine on everything from her conspiracy theories to her sexual side on her latest album, As I Am. Here are a few of the things we learned from Blender‘s cover story.
1. Alicia Keys almost lost her mind to make this record. “I’m the best wall builder that ever lived. These people were coming at me, asking me things, and they really didn’t care about me, but I had to give them everything. What did I have left for myself?” The result was that both Keys and her music got dark and weird. “I was hanging off the edge of a cliff. Something had to give, or I was gonna lose my mind.”
2. Gangsta Rap is a government tool. “Gangsta rap was a ploy to convince black people to kill each other,” says Keys.
3. Alicia’s discovered her sexual side. “I’m discovering my sexual side. I recorded this song – it’s supersimple: just piano, Rhodes keyboard and a kick drum. It’s so sensual. It moves you,” she says. Jeff Robinson, her manager, wasn’t exactly a fan: “he popped out of his seat halfway through. He said: ‘we do not record songs like this!'”
Just like we promised, Stone Temple Pilots are reuniting to hit the road this summer. VH1 was there when the band discussed the decision, and revealed that this is no ordinary jaunt: starting at the end of May, the rockers are embarking on a whopping 65-date tour. First Mary J. let the cat out of the bag, now Jay and Bey‘s florist is talking: UsWeekly‘s latest cover story features a lengthy story on the first couple of hip-hop’s wedding. According to florist Amy Vongpitaka (who probably won’t be hired for any future celeb weddings after opening her big mouth), Mr. and Mrs. Z had an almost six-foot wedding cake, 750 pounds of flowers, and an intimate guest list at their 9,000 square foot apartment. While the couple have refused to confirm or deny their marriage, Beyonce did keep her ring finger covered on Tuesday when the singer stepped out in Manhattan.
