That Metal Debate: The Top 5 David Lee Roth Era Van Halen Songs

Last week on That Metal Show, we were joined by the one and only Sammy Hagar (Chickenfoot) who stepped in as our first ever guest host. He brought us rum and helped us debate the TMS Top 5 this week. Also, joining Hagar as guest was his Chickenfoot bandmate, Michael Anthony, and guest musician John 5, who blew us all away every time we went into a commercial break. (Yes, we are working on getting him full-time.)

Let’s Talk Top 5. We know it could be a bit controversial when mixing David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar in the same sentence with Van Halen, and it’s time we all move on from that. The Red Rocker/former front man for the iconic group helped us determine the Top 5 David Lee Roth Era Van Halen Songs. He’s perfect for the job, especially when you consider that he did sang all of those songs in front of thousands of people before, so he knows exactly which songs get the fans going. (Unlike Jim Florentine, who just sings them in the shower.) Here is what the guys and Sammy came up with:

THE TMS TOP 5 DAVID LEE ROTH ERA VAN HALEN SONGS
1. “Panama”
2. “And The Cradle Will Rock…”
3. “On Fire”
4. “Mean Street”
5. “Unchained”

TMS Top 5 Female Rockers

Last week on That Metal Show, we were joined by the legendary King Diamond, Mark Tremonti (Creed, Alter Bridge) and guest shredder Doug Aldrich. Eddie, Don, and Jim spent the hour catching up with old friends, discussing the best Pantara album in the ‘Throwdown’ and watching fans try to ‘Stump The Trunk.’

The guys also revealed their Top 5 Female Rockers and discussed who was worthy of joining the ranks in this week’s TMS Top 5 list. We can all agree that both the hard rock and heavy metal scenes are heavily overpopulated with male rockers, but let’s not forget about the all lovely ladies of Metal that rock regardless. These ass-kicking, name-taking and of course talented women look-oh-so-lovely in leather, can shred in heels, and will rip your heart out with high notes and kickass lyrics that leave you wanting more. Here’s what we came up with:

That Metal Debate: The Top 5 Best Screams In A Song

This week on That Metal Show we were joined by Joey Kramer and Brad Whitford of Aerosmith. Also joining us was TMS alum George Lynch, who stopped by and melted our faces as our guest shredder.

We had to recruit Evan Seinfeld (Attika7) for one of the toughest TMS Top 5 lists we’ve have ever done on the show: Best Screams on a song. There are so many shrieks and shrills out there in the music world, including the ones we can never forget, like the haunting scream in “Child In Time” by Deep Purple and “Angel of Death” by Slayer (Side note: This one still scares Jim Florentine to this day.) We could easily debate Top 5 Rob Halford Screams, not to mention those of Sebastian Bach, but then we remembered it’s called the TMS Top 5, not Top 100 – So, here’s our top 5:

THAT METAL DEBATE: Top 5 Worst Album Covers (On Great Albums)

Last week on That Metal Show, we were joined by comedian/guitarist Zakk Wylde (Black Label Society) and former front man of Queensryche Geoff Tate, who talked about the betrayal that came with the implosion of the band. Also on our mini stage, we had guest shredder George Lynch joining in on the action.

This week’s TMS Top 5 is different from the rest. Instead of choosing a list based on just the music, we decided to combine music and looks to come up with the Top 5 Worst Album Covers, but the albums have to be great. (We are superficial, we know.) Here’s what we came up with.

TMS Top 5 Worst Album Covers on Great Albums

1. Riot – Fire Down Under

Eddie, Don, and Jim all agree it’s an amazing record, but Riot has had a series of horrendous album covers so we can’t really say we’re surpised by it being #1.  Jim also said it makes him want to club a baby seal. (Don’t worry PETA, no seals were harmed during the filming of That Metal Show).

That Metal Debate: Top 5 Bass Riffs Of All-Time

We kicked off the season premiere of That Metal Show this weekend with Russell Allen and Mike Orlando of Adrenaline Mob, along with David Draiman of Disturbed fame, and rocked out with TMS veteran Mike Portnoy on drums.

In the Season 11 premiere episode, we debated the Top 5 Bass Riffs (not players) with signature lines in songs. You know, when you heard the first few seconds of a song and immediately start banging your head because you know exactly how to play it on air guitar bass and you immediately get excited cause it’s your favorite song or cause it just rocks that hard? Yeah, that.

Top 5 Hair Bands Of The ’80s

That Metal Show's Jim Florentine Picks His Top 5 Hair Bands

If there is one thing that is certain of the ’80s, it’s that we never had to worry about a shortage of hair bands. Big hair, makeup, tight pants — sometimes even tight LEATHER pants — we all know a good hair band when we see one. Jim Florentine, host of That Metal Show, stopped by VH1’s Big Morning Buzz Live today to help sort out the Top 5 Hair Bands of the ’80s. Here is the list that they came up with:

Def Leppard - That Metal Show Top 5 Hairbands

5.  Def Leppard. If you had a pulse in the ’80s or have ever been to a strip club (OR maybe even thought about taking up stripping as a profession, we don’t judge) you probably know the chorus of their iconic song “Pour Some Sugar On Me.” Let’s be real, EVERY TIME you hear this song you have to fight the urge to “take a bottle, shake it up” and of course sing “Pour Some Sugar On Me” at the top of your lungs. This iconic song came off their 1987 album Hysteria that sold over 20 million copies to date and spawned six hit singles. The band is still touring and STILL rocks to this day. Read more…

What Does Hard Rock Music Mean To Your Favorite Rockstars?

Where would you be without hard rock and heavy metal music? Hopefully we won’t ever have to find out. Watch the new promo for That Metal Show with everyone from Slash, Lemmy (Motorhead), Michael Schenker, Warrant, Mike McCready (Pearl Jam), Tom Morello, and more of your favorite rock stars as they sound sound-off on why they’re passionate about hard rock music, and list their favorite bands. Oh, and don’t worry, we aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. A brand new season of That Metal Show starts this August on VH1 Classic.

Dee Snider Makes A Mess For Stanley Steemer

Dee Snider is back on your TV, but this time you won’t see him on The Celebrity Apprentice. Actually, if you were watching the finale of Donald Trump‘s reality show a few weeks ago then you would’ve seen the Twisted Sister frontman starring in a new commercial for Stanley Steemer. In the ad, the rocker shows up at a suburban house where he tells a woman she’s won a Dee Snider Weekend. Her husband flips outs (in make-up like Dee, of course!), trashes the house, and — you already know what happens next — Stanley Steemer shows up to save the day! (YAY!) We feel comforted knowing they are able to “get the rock ‘n’ roll out of your carpet.” We’ll be sure to hit them up after the next house trashing, mosh pit, food fight we have (which, we’re loathe to admit, happens more than you think).
