Led Zeppelin may be getting all the classic rock press these days, but there are still plenty of Beatles fans around, and it’s likely a few million of them will be lapping up the re-release of Help! The Fab Four’s second flick found them romping through the Bahamas and other far flung locales (some crits thought it was a lampoon of the then-new, intrigue-drenched James Bond movies), evading bad guys while trying to regain a rare piece of jewelry from Ringo‘s finger. It?s a quip fest (the guys’ banter always enhanced their charisma), a giddy backdrop for great tunes (“Ticket To Ride,” “You’re Going To Lose That Girl”) and a template for the entire Monkees empire. If you’re a hard rock fan, you now know that Jimmy Page’s recently fractured finger has pushed back the date of the much buzzed-about Led Zeppelin reunion. Ouch for him and ouch for fans who’d made travel plans to go to London in late November. The show’s current date is December 10, and last night, while accepting a lifetime recognition from the Classic Rock Awards in London, the superstar told reporters how his left pinky was hurt when he stumbled over a stone slab in his garden – at least there wasn’t a bustle in his hedgerow. The ever-popular guitarist’s finger was bandaged. Here’s what he said about the fall in a formal statement last Friday.

In most venues, the “green room” is where an artist waits to take the stage. But in The Next Great American Band, it also holds the trap door that drops the losers into oblivion. On Friday night, voters pulled the lever on The Hatch and The Light of Day. Did you hear their screams for help as they plummeted? Did you see their tears? Well, no big loss. Both outfits were mawkish and generic, and ultimately we knew they’d head home with their Strats between their legs. .
Friday’s show was about three things: band names, Elton John, and bad singing. Here’s the list.
Sixwire: The ersatz Eagles outfit adored by all three judges once called themselves The Remnants. Their version of “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me” sounded like Kenny Loggins fronting REO.
Tres Bien: a fan once asked if their moniker meant “Three Beans.” Viewers know that it actually means “Garage Band version of the Turtles,” though Dicko rightly busted ‘em for pilfering a Yardbirds vibe.
Franklin Bridge: Evidently they’ve always been named FB, explaining that it’s a crucial connector that unites Jersey with Philly. Yawn. Their spin on 24-7 Spyz has some prog to it; nice to hear the funkateers getting their Yes on. Yours is no disgrace.
The Clarke Brothers: Early on, the twang sibs wanted to call themselves both Sasafras and Shotgun Wedding, but they stuck with the tedious surname approach. Their spin through “Country Comfort” gave Johnny Rzeznik “goosebumps.”
Light of Doom: The metal Hanson have always been Light of Doom. They even played a song called “Light of Doom.” And, god love ‘em, they haven’t a clue as to what the name might represent. They also haven’t a clue as to the real name of Elton’s lyricist. “Here’s a version of a song by Elton John and Bernie Poppin‘,” said the lead longhair before tearing into “Saturday Night’s Alright For Fighting.”
Morgan Jordan’s ill-fated video for “Werewolf Bar Mitzvah” has had us chuckling since it aired on 30 Rock a few weeks ago. Then it was a 10-second snip. Now it’s a full-ass song, with lyrics about about brisket and circumcision and and fangs and claws. Would a real werewolf ever dance with his cousins?

You can hear the high-vis tunes on the weekly CSI franchises, and marketing campaigns have used “I’m Free” and “Happy Jack” of late. But for the most part the Who‘s music isn’t around all that much – frustrating for fans who know there are lots of other tracks to blast at top volume. Many of them are heard or discussed in Amazing Journey, a portrait of the band and VH1′s latest Rock Doc (watch it this Saturday night). Of course there are lots explosive songs by the band that don’t get spun enough. Write back and call us liars if you’ve given “I Can’t Reach You” some love lately.

Country music fans know that it’s one of life’s great pleasures to hear Porter Wagoner bounce his way through a shuffle or crawl his way through a ballad. The lanky singer, who died yesterday in Nashville at the age of 80, could be a chilling vocalist regardless of of the style. Wagoner is known for being one of the most dapper entertainers in country music – onstage he often sported one of the exotic suits designed by the famed designer Nudie Cohen. He’s also the bandleader who brought Dolly Parton out of Eastern Tennessee obscurity in the late ’60s. Earlier this year, after a lifetime of hits, he cut a gorgeous new disc of hardcore country tunes; it was produced by Marty Stewart, shown with Porter in the picture above.
Part of the fun of watching last Friday’s first installment of The Next Great American Band was seeing just how many oddball outfits were allowed to be seen on this initial “clearing the corn” episode – you know, the cattle call show where they trot out all the wacko groups that didn’t have a snowball’s chance in hell of making it through the first round in the Vegas desert.
Middle-aged nimrod doo-woppers from Nowhereseville, big band jazz boys from Nerd Town, mask-wearing, Cookie Monster-growling Slipknot/GWAR imitators, ersatz Blue Man Group artistes who pummeled the trash cans they were wearing, bar-band blues boys that strutted their Stevie Ray fetishes, a Georgia foursome that came off like an emo Blue Oyster Cult, and, of course, the Afro’d Caucasion yelper of Big Provider, who launched into a ditty with the lyrics, “five, four, three, two, and one/it’s all fun from here/if you doubt that for a second/the good times will disappear!”
Yes, it’s brought you by the American Idol folks.
Those, of course, are not the “ensembles” that Johnny Rzeznik, Sheila E, and the Australian Simon Cowell guy will be judging tonight. Those are the bands that went home to tell the wives and daughters that daddy effed it up again (cue poignant farewell footage). The list of the musicians who will make their stand on the show is as follows:
The Clark Brothers (Nashville twang prodigy sibs who started when they were Smurf fans.)
Cliff Wagner and the Old No. 7 (very impressive bluegrass bar band from San Pedro who dropped “Like a Virgin” on the judges.)
Denver and the Mile High Orchestra (jump-swing-groove rubes who are quite sure they know who’s going to win the World Series – ‘cept they’re wrong.)
You know how stars are: if they’re not happy, they jump on the celly with their babysitters and pitch a fit. We thought John Mayer was different – he’s a happy-go-lucky dude, no? But glue some seafaring captain’s whiskers on the side of his face and he gets all precious on you. We think he should sport those sideburns on through the end of ’08. Could bring a bit of gravitas to his artistic persona. This clip (it’s a goof, c’mon) will explain the whole thing.
If you’re a Mayer maven, you probably know that the costume is part of his promo campaign for the Mayercraft Cruise Sweepstakes, where you can win a few days buzzing around the Bahamas with JM himself, and pals such as Colbie Caillat and Brandi Carlile. You relax, they play some tunes, you hang with ‘em on the poopdeck.
Mary J Blige made her name on articulating drama and storming around with eloquence, but damn, everyone’s got a sunny side sometimes. “Just Fine,” the lead track from her forthcoming Growing Pains, finds the singer bouncing a bit faster than usual, and declaring just how well things are going. It’s fairly irresistible. “No time for moping around,” she coos, “no time for negative vibes,” ultimately rocking an “ooooh” that rivals Michael Jackson‘s classic exclamations.
Growing Pains features collabos with Maroon 5 and Ne-Yo. But “this isn’t about throwing junk together. I want to amaze people,” she told Blender. “I’m constantly looking toward the new kids, like Rihanna, for inspiration; keeps me on my game.”
