Earlier this month the world loss a pioneer in hip-hop when Adam “MCA” Yauch died from cancer at 47. While we mourned the death of a great musician, Beastie Boys group member Adam Horovitz lost a lifelong friend. For the first time since MCA’s death on May 4, Horovitz opened up to RollingStone.com about the group’s vetoing system, MCA’s talent and fearlessness. When asked how he’s handling the pain Horovitz replied, “I’m totally numb.” He went on to reveal a time he was walking his dog and began to cry on the street. But through the grief he shares fond memories of Yauch. Read more…
It seems as if Lupe Fiasco is always in hot water over something. Per Idolator.com, legendary super producer Pete Rock is not pleased with the Lupe’s fresh new track “Around My Way (Freedom Ain’t Free),” the first single from the long awaited Food & Liquor 2 . The single quickly rose to No. 3 on the Rap & Hip-Hop category of the iTunes charts, but Pete Rock doesn’t care about that. His beef is that he didn’t want anyone to sample his classic “They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)” that he created with C.L. Smooth where the hypnotizing horn from Tom Scott’s “Today” blares. And don’t get Pete Rock mad. He’ll unleash his unfiltered thoughts on Twitter.
In expressing his disapproval of the use of his beat being changed Rock sent a series of tweets about why T.R.O.Y. should have been left alone. He tweets, “No disrespect to lupe fiasco and i like him alot but TROY should be left alone. Feel so violated, the beat is next to my heart and was made outta anguish and pain. When it’s like that it should not be touched by no one!” Of course his disclaimer about liking Lupe didn’t stop the pot stirrers from trying to incite a beef between the rapper and producer causing Pete Rock to tweet, “And y’all need to stop the childish games. I’m a fan of lupe and he is a great artist and a great person.” Read more…
fun. is currently making the rounds of the European promotional circuit, where they’re pushing their excellent new album, Some Nights. Last week, during a BBC Radio 1 visit, they covered Gotye’s “Somebody I Used To Know,” a clip that unsurprisingly went viral. Proving they’re fully tapped into the cultural zeitgeist, the gents stopped by the Dutch radio station 3FM yesterday and decided to tackle Carly Rae Jepsen‘s irresistible “Call Me Maybe.” Just because the threesome are reading the lyrics off of a sheet of Xerox paper doesn’t mean that they don’t understand the song’s rhythmic structure innately; their faithful cover does an admirable job of trying to match the exuberance of Jepsen’s original. While we’re anxious for someone to give “Call Me Maybe” the kind of stalkerish flip that Travis famously gave to the Britney Spears classic “Baby One More Time”, there’s little doubt in our minds that fun.’s cover will brighten up your Wednesday morning.
UPDATE (12:05 p.m.): Sorry guys, the stream has expired. That said, we’ll be sure and keep you posted when clips from the show go live on MTV Hive.
Garbage’s highly anticipated fifth album, Not Your Kind of People, just dropped yesterday. And to celebrate its release, MTV Hive livestreamed the alt-pop foursome’s first New York City show in over seven years from Manhattan’s Webster Hall last night. Rather than standing in the back, fighting to see over those tall dudes who always seem to stand directly in front of you at concerts, you’ll be able to witness Shirley Manson in all her glory as you watch the entire Live In NYC show right here on VH1 Tuner. Be still my 1990s, post-grunge, prepubescent, beating heart! (Just remember to keep your fingers close to those Alt and Tab buttons in case your boss unexpectedly swings over…)

If there’s anything Lady Gaga wants it’s for everyone to be accepted for who they are. But it looks like the megastar is having a hard time being accepted for who she is by certain religious groups throughout Asia. Recently Gaga made headlines for her controversial “Born This Way” Asian tour that has garnered attention for protesters that are against what Gaga stands for and what they perceive would “threaten morality.” Indonesian police would not grant her a permit to perform despite the sold-out concert where 52,000 attendees were expected. In South Korea those under the age of 18 were prohibited from attending the concert. In addition, the AP reported that approximately 200 Christian youth in Milana, Philippines protested against her performing in Milana. Gaga prevailed in Milana and gave over 16,000 of her little monsters exactly what they’d hoped for last night. Read more…
Last week, we reported how former Black Sabbath drummer Bill Ward was edited out of dozens of photos on Sabbath’s official website. Most people, (including us) jumped to conclusion that Sabbath was retaliating to Bill Ward’s announcement of not involving himself the upcoming reunion shows. BUT, a statement from Sabbath reveals that Ward, through his attorney, asked to be “temporarily removed” from the group’s website “so as to not give the public the wrong impression about his involvement.” Bill will remain cropped and photoshopped out of the shots for the duration of the band’s forthcoming shows.
Over the weekend, the reunited original line-up of Black Sabbath, sans drummer Bill Ward, performed their hometown gig in Birmingham, England despite the drama taking place over the past few weeks. Bill chose not to include himself because he felt as though the contract he was offered was unfair and they couldn’t reach an agreement. Bassist Geezer Butler commented on his decision, releasing a statement that reads, “I feel sad to see the Sabbath reunion becoming a bit of a soap opera on the Internet.” Butler said the band never knew about the drama circling Bill Ward and feels their representatives could have worked it out. Geezer goes on to say that Bill “wanted an amount that was unrealistic.” He ends his statement saying Bill made his decision, and he has to respect that, but hopes to some day play with Ward again.
Wait, there’s more. Read more…
Here’s a little PSA: Airports have security checks. Now repeat. Upcoming rapper 2 Chainz was arrested today at LaGuardia airport after airport security learned of a rather unusual weapon in his carry on bag. No, it wasn’t a gun or knife; 2 Chainz was packing brass knuckles. TMZ reports 2 Chainz was on his way to a show in North Carolina in the Delta airlines terminal when TSA discovered the weapon in his bag. We can’t help but chuckle–not at the arrest, of course–but the fact that a southern rapper was carrying brass knuckles around all willy nilly.
Once police were called to the scene, the rapper known for his hit track “Spend It” was charged with possession of a criminal weapon, which is a misdemeanor. He was taken away to jail and per TMZ, a rep for 2 Chainz would only say his team is “handling the situation.” Now, about that team. Is this the same team that potentially packed his bags (yes, famous people have people to do that for them)? We can concoct a hundred funny stories of why 2 Chainz had the brass knuckles in the first place. Is this a part of his every day attire? Was he using them earlier and forgot to them out of the bag? Whatever the reason these types of incidents are totally avoidable with a careful double check. Last week 2 Chainz released the video to “Murder” featuring Kreayshawn. Perhaps he was listening to his own song right before he headed to the airport and thought, ‘Hey, I might need these.’

Since Jay-Z’s press conference in Philadelphia last week we’ve been on pins and needles anticipating the announcement for the lineup of the Made in America festival he’s curating and headlining on September 1 and 2. Jigga man delivered on the goal he’d set for himself asking, “Is it going to push the culture forward?” With such a diverse selection of musical acts crossing multiple genres, we’d say the answer to Jay’s query is unequivocally, “Yes!”
For the two day festival on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway in Philly, music lovers can enjoy the tunes of Pearl Jam, Afrojack, Odd Future, Skrillex, Miike Snow, Dirty Projectors, X, the Knocks, Calvin Harris, Jay’s artist Rita Ora, Prince Royce, Janelle Monae, Santigold, Passion Pit, Wale, Rick Ross, Meek Mill, the DJ set by Savoy and the return of D’Angelo. Let’s not forget Hov will also hit the stage as the headliner. As with everything he does, Jay-Z took his job as curator seriously, and created a highly anticipated festival.
Oh, can we talk about Jay sangging R&B singer D’Angelo (who hasn’t released an album in 12 years) for a minute? Over the weekend D’Angelo made headlines when a GQ profile hit the net with him looking rather scrumptious. The singer is working on an album, and whatever Jay did to get him to perform at Budweiser’s Made in America, we salute you, Jay. As diverse as the list of performers is, even more acts will be announced next week. Jay-Z can check off successful curator from his bucket list.
