Pop, R&B, and hip-hop are known for their strong female artists, women who have made an impact on both a musical and cultural level. Those kinds of singers abound right now, so it’s a perfect time for VH1 to revitalize its respected Divas show. The 2009 edition of the multi-artist presentation takes place at a perfect venue, the Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Howard Gilman Opera House, on September 17. VH1 will air the show live. A new generation of participants will be on board, and performers, presenters, and special guests will be announced as they are confirmed.

The list of artists who have previously performed is tremendous. From Aretha Franklin to Debbie Harry to Joss Stone to Mariah Carey, an array of generations and perspectives has been presented. This year?s scope promises to just as wide. Producers have their eyes on strong women whose songs have brought joy, optimism and empowerment into the lives of listeners.

Further, they?d love for listeners to weigh in on who would make a great Divas participant. What does the term ?diva? mean to you in 2009? Someone heroic? Someone inspiring? Hit the comments field and lets us know. We?re also open to suggestions: feel free to make a list of the artists you?d like to see perform on the show, as well as cast your opinion on which two singers would make a perfect ?Diva Duet.?

Thanks for all this. Your participation will make this year?s edition of Divas that much more fun. Stay tuned for more information on the show. We?ll be posting it here in the blog.

Watch Music Videos By Lady Gaga And the Girls

Lady Gaga has certainly scored a royal flush with her recent hand of hits! Whether she’s urging us to keep up our guard by sporting a “Poker Face” or recommending delirium in “Just Dance,” her anthems grab pop fans by both the ears and butt. The young “blonde” diva is constantly being compared to early-era Madonna, transforming ordinary concert-goers to superfans as she thrills audience after audience on her Fame Ball tour, which she calls ?a travelling party.?

She?s got a background in burlesque, a deep appreciation for Andy Warhol, and a bit of dismay over wearing pants ? no wonder Gaga?s turning heads on stage. Her sensationalism has only just hit the scene, but she is already ranking alongside our faves of 2009!

She?s not alone either. It seems we?re in a pop season where there?s plenty of female aristocracy.

Green Day: Watch The Premiere of Their New Video on April 24

green-day-cover

Green Day freaks have been waiting a while for the superstar punk trio’s follow-up to their monumental American Idiot. But the wildly anticipated 21st Century Breakdown is on its way (due May 15) and to whet appetites, the disc’s first video is being premiered on VH1 Friday, April 24 at 8 pm ET. Director Matthew Cullen says that “Know Your Enemy” is going to visually overwhelming. It was shot in downtown Los Angeles, and features the band in performance.

“There’s a lot of symbolism that I tried to mirror [in the shoot],” Cullen told MTV news. “I took a lot of influence from Green Day’s lyrics and the imagery of [street artist] Banksy. It may not sound like a lot, but it’s huge visually. It’s gonna be a new experience for a lot of their fans. I mean, it’s still Green Day, but it’s just bigger.”

21st Century Breakdown tells the story of of a young couple, Christian and Gloria, as they negotiate “the mess and promise of the century so far,” according to the band’s record label. The tale features three acts: ?Heroes and Cons,? ?Charlatans and Saints,? and ?Horseshoes and Handgrenades.?

Songs include ?21 Guns,? ?East Jesus Nowhere,? ?Before the Lobotomy,? and ?Restless Heart Syndrome.? Rolling Stone has said the disc is ?a record of die-hard punk ideals?tightly scripted, continually ascending classic-rock excitement,” and that the music is a “rock opera in which the rock always comes first.” Butch Vig, famed Nirvana producer, was at the helm of the new album.

Green Day has been testing the new material in clubs and theaters around their stomping grounds of the San Francisco Bay area for the last few days.

Stay tuned to the VH1 blog for more info and a sneak peek at the “Know Your Enemy” video.
