Seeing as how The Script hail from Ireland and perform majestic pop-rock songs with soaring melodies, it makes perfect sense that many have compared the VH1 You Oughta Know band’s sound to U2. While only time will tell if The Script will be able to match the career longevity of Dublin’s favorite sons, the band clearly seems happy with the comparison. So much so, in fact, that they cast Bono’s daughter, Eve Hewson, as the lead in the video for “For The First Time,” the first single off the group’s second LP, Science & Faith. The song went to #1 in Ireland when it was released overseas back in August, but it’s just arriving on these shores now. The video will make its on-air this weekend on the VH1 Top 20 Video Countdown, but thanks to the magic of streaming technology, you can watch it on your computer monitor ’til your heart’s content starting right this very second. Enjoy!
After spending the month of October riding shotgun with the boys in 30 Seconds To Mars, it’s time to bid the emo rockers adieu and say hello to our VH1 Posted artist for the month of November, Keri Hilson (aka @MissKeriBaby on Twitter).
Keri Hilson has been building her rep in the music industry for the better part of the last ten years, but it’s only been in the last few where she’s really blown up into a household name. Her collaborations with Timbaland in 2007 (“The Way I Are”) and Kanye West in 2008 (“Knock You Down”) were some of the biggest chart smashes of each of those respective years, and her starring appearance in Usher’s “Love In The Club” video has been streamed more than 41 million (!) times. As amazing as these past successes have been for Hilson, her biggest moments have yet to come.
You might already know VH1′s latest You Oughta Know act, Grace Potter & the Nocturnals. The band’s new album hit #6 on iTunes’ most downloaded list. They’ve appeared on Ellen and Jay Leno. Their songs have been featured on ER and Grey’s Anatomy. They performed on Tim Burton‘s Alice in Wonderland soundtrack. And VH1 just announced that they’re part of this year’s VH1 Divas Salute the Troops lineup with Katy Perry and Nicki Minaj. So why all the hoopla?
For starters, the Vermont-based quartet has attracted a loyal fan base by releasing three well-reviewed albums since forming in 2002 and paying some serious dues on the tour circuit (up to 200 gigs a year). But of course Grace Potter’s sound is the main draw. It recalls the soulful side of 70′s rock, and we’re guessing that some fans are latching onto it partially as an alternative to the prevalence of auto-tune. It also doesn’t hurt that frontwoman Grace Potter has a powerful bluesy voice and happens to be more than a little attractive.
Speaking of attractive, we caught up with Grace at Austin City Limits music fest last month and she posed for some pics. Click the jump to see.
If you watched VH1′s Divas last year, you may recall presenter Kathy Griffin being called a “fire-crotch” by host Paula Abdul. Now it’s Kathy’s turn to dole out the jabs. VH1 is announcing that the quick-witted “D-List” comedian will serve as host of “VH1 Divas Salute The Troops,” airing Dec. 5 at 9/8c. And she’s already promised VH1 that she “will not hold back.” Also announced: the rock quartet Grace Potter & The Nocturnals has been added to a lineup that already includes Katy Perry, Nicki Minaj, Sugarland, Keri Hilson and Paramore. Full press release after the jump.
A few weeks ago, we introduced you to Christina Perri, our latest You Oughta Know artist. Luckily for us, she was in town recently and carved some time out of her schedule to perform in our glamorous elevator lobby as part of our ongoing Live At VH1 series. Since we are nothing if not generous, we figured we would share her entire three-song performance with you, the VH1 Blog reader. Above, we’ve got her performing her hit single, “Jar Of Hearts,” and below, her take on “Arms” and “Bang Bang Bang.” Enjoy!

If you’re a country music fan, you’ve no doubt been up to your ears* in high quality album releases this month. Albums like Taylor Swift‘s Speak Now and Sugarland‘s The Incredible Machine are both tearing up the charts and earning widespread critical acclaim. Speaking of Sugarland, both Jennifer Nettles and Kristian Bush swung by our New York offices recently and were kind enough to play Five Questions with us. After watching this, if you ever hear Jennifer call Kristian “chicken,” you’ll know why!
*Is “up to your ears” even an expression? Well, it is now!
We’ve asked you this before, but it can’t hurt to ask again: Do you like to dance? Do you have a computer? Do you like money? If you answered yes to all three of these questions, then you?re not only going to love Dance Cam Slam, but you should probably enter to appear on the show, too! We’re only a few days away from the show’s premiere at 10/9c on Tuesday, October 26, and we just wanted to share some of the amazingness that we have received at the show’s casting site. Since you’ve already seen our compilations of contestants performing to “Bootylicious” and “Everybody Dance Now,” we figured it’s high time to share this clip of people just like you getting down to Usher’s “Yeah” (including Philip from Money Hungry).
There’s an ancient maxim that claims people either have brains or beauty, never both. But Caleb and Jared Followill of the Kings of Leon are an exception to the rule. They seem to have it all, plus a sense of humor! The humor element is what we weren’t entirely expecting when the Nashville-based crew sat down to talk with VH1 News’ Janell Snowden about their new album, Come Around Sundown. That’s not to say the standard topics weren’t covered, like how their music has evolved and what it feels like to win a Grammy Award for Record of the Year.
But both of the Followill brothers had such a self-deprecating, polite sense of humor and were so spontaneous and lighthearted that VH1′s BestWeekEver.tv clipped out the funniest moments of the Kings of Leon interview. Check VH1.com later to watch the full VH1 interview and vote for the Kings of Leon’s single “Radioactive” on VH1′s Top 20 Video Countdown.
