It’s all the rage these days to complain about concert attendees who kill the vibe by spending the entire show recording with their mobile phones or, worse, their iPads. While we don’t disagree entirely with the rage against those addicted to their screens, we would like to thank those brave souls who sacrifice the experience of living in the moment in order to capture these moments for posterity, especially when said moments result in once-in-a-lifetime fails. So, won’t you join us and salute these amateur videographers without whose dedication we would never have been able to see this grainy footage of superstar musicians like Beyoncé, Jennifer Lopez, Metallica’s Jason Newsted, Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler hilariously wiping out on stage for all our enjoyment? (Oh, PS: We turned all of these fails into GIFs for your enjoyment. You’re welcome!) Read more…
The singer-songwriter sometimes gets a bad rap in the world of music. You think of someone moping with a guitar in a coffee shop, but the 30 sexy singer-songwriters on our list wrote the love songs that became our songs of lust.
From the time Michael Jackson hit the music scene as a child, it was obvious his unique talent would carry him for years to come. With today marking what would have been his 55th birthday, we take a look at the King of Pop’s extensive career and highlight his best hits.
We’ve teamed up with our friends who produce The Greatest to put together this official VH1 list of The 40 Greatest Michael Jackson Songs. Check out which tracks made the cut, and don’t forget to fire up our Spotify playlist to keep the celebration going all day long! Be sure to let us know in the comments what you think of our rankings and you can also debate our choices on Twitter by hitting us @VH1.
Each and every year since the program debuted in 1984, audiences have been tuning into the Video Music Awards en masse for a chance to see two things: That year’s hottest musical acts perform live AND what happens when you put said hottest musical acts together in a relatively confined space. Thankfully for viewers, the combination of the intense media spotlight, oversized egos, and chemical stimulants have resulted in some truly memorable jaw-dropping moments over the show’s 29 year history, moments that we have collected together into the following list: The 15 Most WTF Moments In VMA History.
Part of being an artist is believing that you’re the chosen one. The one and only messianic megastar to save the masses from musical mediocrity! No wonder every top-selling pop star we can think of has a staggering God complex. From Kanye West naming his new album Yeezus (really, dude?) to John Lennon proclaiming that “the Beatles are bigger than Jesus,” these narcissistic icons take hero worship to biblical levels.
One of the biggest stories in the world of pop music over the last week has been the (pardon the pun) upROAR over whether or not Katy Perry‘s new single “Roar” borrows a bit too liberally from Sara Bareilles‘ “Brave” (see: Is Katy Perry A Sara Bareilles Kopy Kat?). If you ask us, both songs are under suspicion for lifting the opening piano line of “Something Beautiful” by Robbie Williams, so we feel like neither party can claim absolute innocence here.
It’s worth noting that this is neither the first—nor will it be the last!—instance when one songwriter accuses another songwriter of cribbing a riff or a melody. With that said, it’s time to present you with this: the Top 10 Rip-Offs In Pop Music History.
The Immortal Bard once wrote, “If music be the food of love, play on!” but in the cases of these ten amazing bands, love was the fuel behind the music. In each of these 10 bands, at least 2 (if not all) of the bandmates were involved with each other and that off stage romance inspired an amazing song. For some of the couples on our list, their tumultuous break ups inspired classic hit songs, while for others, their true love gave way to sweet, soulful ballads. The course of true love ne’er did run smooth, but it truly inspired these 10 songs.
We’ve probably all heard of the motto that proclaims, “Live fast, die young and leave a good looking corpse.” Some of our favorite rock stars of all time only seem to have gotten to the “live fast” part.
For whatever reason–good luck, great genes, or maybe lots of Tai Chi–the 20 bad boys on our list did every drug imaginable, slept with every person they could find, drank every drink in sight and are still somehow with us as old men.
Hip hop is a curious genre — a rapper with the sickest flow could have a name more befitting a cartoon character (Eminem, anyone?). From Snoop Dogg to Too Short, here are the silliest rapper monikers of all time.
The return of Erykah Badu on Janelle Monae‘s new song, “Q.U.E.E.N.“, reminded us of a genre that hasn’t seen much love in the past few years: Neo Soul. In the late ’90s, it seemed like everyone was exploring a world of retro R&B influenced by soul and hip hop but these days, the artists channeling this vibe are far and few between. We rounded up 32 artists that helped define this genre of music. Read more…
