Last week, Antipodean superstars Gotye (an Australian artist) and Kimbra (who hails from New Zealand) stopped by our offices in the heart of Times Square. Taking some time out from their US tour to chat with us, the pair were endearing and sweet, and this month’s You Oughta Know artist Gotye gave us a glimpse into the genius mind behind their hit track, “Somebody That I Used To Know.” Our photographer, Michele Crowe, followed the pair around the building to capture some intimate, candid moments for us, including the amazing performance they put on in our lobby! You can see all the fun we had when Gotye and Kimbra came to visit below (and after the jump!).
Scars of 45 let their beauty run wild at VH1 headquarters when they came to our offices late last year and played a short set for us. Our featured You Oughta Know artist this month, Scars on 45 dropped by to share their unassuming, sentimental, guitar-driven music with us. One of our favorite numbers was “Beauty’s Running Wild” (watch the video below), which got the band some much deserved attention when it was featured on an episode of CSI: New York last year. Our photographer, Colin Gray, followed the band around while they were visiting and managed to grab some candid moments on film for us…
VH1 DIVAS Celebrates Soul is set to air this Monday, December 19 at 9 p.m. ET/8 CT, only on VH1. Yesterday was the first day of rehearsals at midtown Manhattan’s Hammerstein Ballroom, and we here at VH1 Tuner were the only people on hand to not only catch some of the biggest names in music practicing their big numbers, but also spending some quality time bonding. Our ace photographer, Lauren Deiman, grabbed the following shots of stars like Florence Welch (of Florence + The Machine fame), Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, current You Oughta Know artist Sharon Jones, Marsha Ambrosius, Estelle, Ledisi, and last but by no means least, Motown legend Martha Reeves.
We can’t wait for you to see the whole show, it’s gonna be AMAZING. But for now, here’s a sneak peek at the this year’s outstanding DIVAS show.
Dynamic duo Karmin popped by the VH1 studios for a hang, and it was as vibrant, colorful and fun filled as you would expect from Karmin! Our photographer, Colin Gray, followed the pair around and got plenty of snaps of them goofing off (after the jump). We were also lucky enough to be able to head behind the scenes for the shoot of their new video “Crash Your Party,” which is Karmin’s first ever professionally-shot clip, and the two appear in awe of the whole process, saying, “only 6 months ago we were just in our living room making home videos!” Well, home videos no longer — Karmin are about to hit the big time!
Daughtry visited our New York offices to hang out and perform as part of VH1′s Top 20 Live (all the while being captured on film by our photographer Lauren Weissler). The band played an awesome acoustic set, including a raw, powerful cover of The Black Crowes’ “She Talks To Angels”. And they also gave us sparkling renditions of their own songs, in an atmospheric, intimate setting. One of your favorites was their new single, “Crawling Back To You,” which you can watch below.
VH1 Unplugged: Kelly Clarkson makes its highly anticipated premiere exclusively on VH1.com this Thursday night, November 17, at 7 p.m. ET. We’ve already told you how stunning Kelly looked when this show taped back in late October, and if you caught her cover of Carrie Underwood’s “I Know You Won’t” when we premiered it last week, you have an idea yourself. However, VH1 photographer Colin Gray just sent us a bunch of the photos that he was able to take that afternoon and we couldn’t resist sharing his insanely awesome work with you (as well as a quick video of Kelly explaining why she didn’t perform barefoot, like she usually does, while taping VH1 Unplugged). Enjoy!
We had the pleasure of hooking up with former VH1 You Oughta Know artist and forever VH1 fave Sara Bareilles as she performed on the Today Show and chatted in a bowling alley with our very own Jim Shearer to support her latest album, Kaleidoscope Heart. Enjoy the pics and see comments from Sara below.
New Orleans band MUTEMATH brought the blues to the VH1 studios for an intimate You Oughta Know Live performance recently—check out their cover of “Fallin” by Alicia Keys—and we recently selected them as our You Oughta Know artist thanks to their catalog of soulful, dusty, all-American tunes. Bringing joy, laid back cool and their infectious sounds to New York City, MUTEMATH (tailed closely by our photographer Colin Gray) personify dirty, heartfelt rock. After the jump, see MUTEMATH performing under ambient light, laughing in conversation, and some special moments between the band mates and their special ladies.
Gavin DeGraw is a New York City native, so his visit last month to record Bruno Mars cover “Grenade” and several original songs for a Top 20 Live set, he didn’t exactly have a long way to travel. Nevertheless, VH1 photographer Colin Gray got some great shots for our Music Seen feature, and we even got some feedback from DeGraw himself on some of the photographs in the series. After the jump, DeGraw’s travels from Live With Regis & Kelly to VH1 to MTV News, plus a glimpse at his style, and, of course, pit stops every step of the way for his many and adoring fans.
When Demi Lovato came to our offices last week to record a Top 20 Live set, she not only surprised us with a Lil Wayne cover, but also proved extremely genial. “Hey guys, thanks for having me! I’m Demi. What’s your name?” she introduced herself, before kicking her set off with the medley, above, of “Catch Me,” a deep cut from 2009′s Here We Go Again, and “Don’t Forget,” the title track from her 2008 debut. That same temperament shines through in the series of photographs our own Jen Marigliano snapped for our Music Seen feature, as she followed Lovato during her day in New York City. After the jump, look behind the scenes at VH1′s Top 20 and check out the elements of Lovato’s bohemian-chic style, and be sure to check back for the rest of her Top 20 Live set.
