Music Seen: “Take A Minute” To Get To Know K’naan

If you didn’t already know, this is K’naan! We caught up with our You Oughta Know artist of the month at Le Poisson Rouge in NYC’s Greenwich Village earlier this month, where he performed a sultry set featuring his songs “Take a Minute” (which you can watch below), “Bulletproof Pride” and “Is Anybody Out There?” (which you can watch here). Hearing his passionate vocals over live acoustics was musical heaven, and seeing him perform in such an intimate setting really accentuated both the power and poetical flow of his lyrics.

Before, during and after his performance, K’naan proved to be a super friendly and very chill guy. Our ace photographer Colin Gray got to spend some extra time with him for the latest installment of our on-going Music Seen series. Enjoy!

Steven Adler Sports A That Metal Show T-Shirt At This Weekend’s RRHOF Induction Ceremony

Steven Adler That Metal Show T-Shirt

Well, after more drama than we care to recall, this weekend’s Rock And Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony went off without a hitch (relatively speaking, of course). Sure, there were a few prominent no-shows —W. Axl Rose, Rod Stewart, Adam “MCA” Yauch, Izzy Stradlin— but those who were there very clearly had a blast.

This year, Red Hot Chili Peppers, the Beastie Boys, Donovan, Laura Nyro, the Faces, and, of course, Guns N’ F*cking Roses were inducted into the Hall. This year’s private ceremony was held in Cleveland, and clips of the performances that happened on Saturday night that are popping up on YouTube are getting pulled down without haste, presumably to get everyone to tune-in when HBO airs the ceremony in a few weeks.

That said, our favorite moment of the evening is easily to call out: Guns N’ Roses drummer, former Celebrity Rehab patient and longtime friend of That Metal Show Steven Adler wore a TMS t-shirt to the ceremony! You can take a gander at it, in all its majesty, in our gallery below (and you can get one of your own in the TMS Shop on VH1.com).

10 Nostalgic Reasons To Watch The 40 Greatest Yo! MTV Raps Moments (PHOTOS)

Who doesn’t love flashbacks, particularly to hip hop’s golden era of the late 80s and early 90s? Television and music in that era were so badass, and the fashion? Well, that had it’s ups and down. However, there’s no arguing that this era was when hip hop expanded from a genre to a global culture, and throughout it all, Yo! MTV Raps was at the forefront of the movement documenting classic moments of hip hop culture.

On Wednesday night, VH1 will be airing a 2-hour special, The 40 Greatest Yo! MTV Raps Moments, beginning at 7 p.m. ET/PT. To whet your appetite, we pulled a bunch of classic stills from the legendary program —everything from badboy Bobby Brown to a (non-holographic) Tupac going off on the Hughes Brothers to Mary J. Blige pre-”No More Drama.”

2Pac Comes Back To Life At Coachella (As A Hologram), Performs With Snoop Dogg

“GANGSTA SH*T!” That was Snoop Dogg‘s reaction to performing alongside Tupac Shakur at Coachella last night. No, Snoop wasn’t just trippin’ on some super dope kush (although we’re pretty sure he was), the legendary 2Pac was brought back to life —on Greek Easter, no less!— and appeared in holographic form during Dr. Dre‘s closing set at Coachella last night.

We had heard earlier in the week that the late Nate Dogg was set to appear alongside Dre, Snoop, Wiz Khalifa, 50 Cent and Eminem during Sunday night’s headlining set on the Coachella Stage, but then rumors started flying around over the weekend that 2Pac would be the one to be reanimated using hologram technology. There were rumors that the CGI Pac would team up with Dre for “California Love”, but 2Pac performed “Hail Mary” and “2 Of Amerikaz Most Wanted” with Snoop Dogg instead. We’ve got video of the moment for you above, but be warned that the language is a little salty and therefore NSFW.

Beyonce Unleashes A Treasure Trove Of Never Before Seen Photos On Her New Tumblr

If you are an active member of the Tumblr community, your dashboard has no doubt been taken over this morning by Beyoncé. King B herself launched beyonce.tumblr.com this morning, a site that is chock full of pictures of Bey and her hubby Jay-Z enjoying the good life (and their untold riches) over the last few years. As you’ll recall, the couple decided to release the first pics of baby Blue Ivy Carter on the rapidly growing social blogging platform recently, which makes us think that they have invested some of their beacoup bucks in the site.

Either way, there are dozens upon dozens of pictures of B and J on the new site. Pictures of them smoking Cubanos together, relaxing in the French Riviera and just generally goofing off. There’s a bunch of solo Beyoncé pics, too, including her dressed up as Spiderman (Spiderwoman?), and even some snaps of her buried in the sand looking like the fly-est mermaid you ever did see. We’ve picked our 20 favorite pictures to share with you below, but be sure to head over to beyonce.tumblr.com and check them all out for yourself!

Tuned In: Katy Perry Goes Medieval On The Kids Choice Awards

Katy Perry Goes Medieval At The Kids Choice Awards

Unless you have a couple of children running around your household, we’re betting there’s a very good chance that you missed the Kids Choice Awards that aired on Nickelodeon on Saturday night. We’ve got all of the coverage of who got slimed (hint: The Biebs!) over at our sister site TheFABLife, but we’re here to focus on the musicians that strutted their stuff for the kid set.

The show got off to a rip-roaring start with host Will Smith sliming everyone in the pit to the party rockin’ strains of LMFAO, and boy band sensation du jour One Direction made all the girls go CA-RAY-ZEE, but the performance of the night belonged to Katy Perry. She performed her most recent #1 hit, “Part Of Me”, but wisely refrained from turning in a performance that the likes of Naomi Wolf could label as military propaganda. Instead, Katy took an old school —a REALLY old school— approach by donning Dungeons & Dragons-style gear and directing the ire of the song towards a king who presumably did her wrong. Talk about a performer who’s maxed out her HP in the Constitution and Charisma fields!

Music Seen: Experience What Five Days In Austin Felt Like During The 2012 SXSW Music Festival

SXSW 2012 Music Seen

The 2012 SXSW Music Festival is in the books, y’all. Your friendly neighborhood VH1 Tuner team was down in Austin for five days, but it felt more like a month (in a good way!). By that, we mean that Austin is a very inviting place, the kind of city that is big enough that you don’t get bored by it, but small enough that you get familiar with the layout quickly. In short, by the time we left the city on Sunday afternoon, it sort of felt like home.

If you’ve never been down to Austin —this was actually the first time down there for both myself and our ace photographer, Jen Marigliano— we wanted to give you a vibe of what the city is like during the festival. So, in this special SXSW edition of our long-running Music Seen feature, you’ll get a sense of what we experienced during our short trip to the Lone Star state. You’ll see some of the artists that we spent time with (like B.o.B, T.I., Neon Hitch, Train, Kimbra and more!), the crowds of people who fly in from all over the world to see live music at intimate venues, and how music truly takes over this awesome college town for six days each and every March. Enjoy!

Welcome to SXSW 2012!

Music Seen: Neon Hitch Lights Up Austin With Her Vibrant Style At SXSW

Neon Hitch might have only performed three songs during her whirlwind visit to the 2012 SXSW Music Festival, but there’s no denying that she made a big impact on the city of Austin. After Neon performed hits like “Love U Betta” and “Ass Back Home” on Tuesday night, we managed to corral some time with her on Wednesday morning before she left for the airport.

During that time, she told us a little bit about her new record (“Benny Blanco produced pretty much the whole album, I did some with Darkchild and Greg Kurstin, and I have a great song (‘Gold’) that’s one of the singles that I wrote with Bruno Mars“) and what factors play in her decision to perform her new single, “Love U Betta,” in its radio-friendly form or it’s raunchier, unedited style. “Usually it’s not my decision,” Neon explained. “Usually someone is going, ‘You have to keep this clean, Neon, or there’s gonna be trouble.’ And I’m like, ‘Okayyyyyy!’” She also spent some time wandering the streets of Austin with our ace photographer, Jen Marigliano, for this very special SXSW edition of Music Seen.

Music Seen: Graffiti6 Visit VH1 And Make Everyone Swoon

Our March You Oughta Know artist, Graffiti6, headed down to VH1 headquarters last week to hang out with us. We had a great day with Jamie and Tommy, the duo that make up our new favorite band. With our photographer Colin Gray following them around the studios, we got to be privy to some fun, some candid, and some exciting moments all captured on film. And let’s not mention the swoon factor in our offices that day — as the dreamy duo played live for us, there was a collective knee buckling in the room, and we’re only just starting to get our balance back!

SNL: Nicki Minaj, Bon Iver And A Very Surprised Taylor Swift Drop By Jay-Z And Beyonce’s House

Maya Rudolph and Sleigh Bells were the host and musical guest, respectively, on last night’s episode of Saturday Night Live. The standout sketch of the evening involved the world’s most famous new parents, Jay-Z (played by Jay Pharoah) and Beyoncé (Rudolph) welcoming a slew of famous musicians to their crib to welcome the newest member of the Carter family, Blue Ivy Carter (see: Photos of Blue Ivy Carter). Their guests at their Scarsdale, NY home included the mystery wrapped inside of a riddle wrapped inside of an enigma that is Prince (played to perfection by Fred Armisen), 2012 Grammys host LL Cool J (played by Kenan Thompson, a comedian whose many strengths do not include the ability to do a spot-on impression), a rambunctious Nicki Minaj (played more than adequately by Nasim Pedrad), Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie (Taran Killam and Abby Elliott, respectively), and a VERY surprised Taylor Swift (Kristen Wiig).

There was one other surprise visitor to see the Notorious B.I.C. — the 2012 winner of the Best New Artist Grammy, Bon Iver! Frequent SNL cameo actor and former musician Justin Timberlake turned in a hilarious impression of the notoriously shy indie frontman, which included singing a parody version of “Holocene” that served as a lullaby that put both Blue Ivy AND Bon Iver himself to sleep. Justin (unnecessarily) went out of his way at the end of the show to make peace with the bearded Wisconsin native, holding up a sign that read “I (Heart) Bon Iver” as the show credits rolled, but we’re pretty sure that the recent SNL musical guest didn’t care. After all, unlike Snooki and Skrillex, everyone managed to pronounce his name correctly.
