The nominees for the 2012 Grammy Awards—seventy-eight categories worth, if you’re counting at home!—were announced last night. Four of those categories (Album of the Year, Song of the Year, Record of the Year, and Best New Artist) were announced live on CBS during a star-studded concert, featuring performances by the likes of Lady Gaga, Rihanna, The Band Perry and more. If you happened to go to bed early or decided to watch American Horror Story instead, we’re here to help. Rather than plead ignorance when your co-workers ask you for your thoughts on the nominations, we’ve come up with this list of eight handy conversation starters to get you going. No, we’re not focusing on boring things like who got the most nominations in this post (if you want that stuff, no worries, we’ve got you covered); instead, we’re gonna give you a kickstart for some things that are actually fun to discuss, like whether or not Lady Gaga was doing dressed like a cross between a Cobra Kai member and Riff Raff from The Rocky Horror Picture Show, if Kanye West is going to go ballistic again after being snubbed in the Album of the Year category, and deciphering what exactly a Skrillex is. Enjoy, and happy watercoolering.

Taylor Swift has been blazing across the country on her Speak Now tour, and in her warm, earnest way, she’s been welcoming city-specific guests to share the stage with her while she pays unique tributes to all the towns she visits. And now, on the final leg of her tour, Taylor is in that town, New York City, and the opportunities for tributes and guests are almost endless. For her first New York show last night at Madison Square Garden, Taylor played “one of the greatest songs ever written,” The Goo Goo Dolls‘ “Iris,” with the band’s frontman Johnny Rzeznik. With one last show set to light up the Garden tonight, we’re speculating who of the New York set will join Taylor on stage. Will it be a Strokes affair? Mother Monster? Or a spectral visitor from the afterlife?
Who did we miss? We want to hear your thoughts!

Did you watch the 2011 American Music Awards last night? No worries whatsoever if you didn’t, because we here at VH1 Tuner have got your back. Whether you need something to discuss with Sally from Accounting about for the 20 seconds you’re awkwardly standing together in the break room waiting for your coffee to finish brewing OR you want to make sure your pop culture game is on point at the bar tonight, we put together this handy summary of the 10 most likely events from the evening that would come up in conversation. From Christina Aguilera‘s hot mess ensemble (which we kind of loved!) to Taylor Swift‘s constant state of surprise (“Who, me?”), from the correct way to pronounce Ellie Goulding (which will come in handy if you run into Robin Thicke) to the correct answer of whether that was indeed Little Pitbull that appeared in Pitbull‘s trousers while he was mock humping J.Lo, here is the story of the American Music Awards told in ten easily digestible parts. Bon appetit!

You’ll be able to catch all the highlights from that two-night spectacular beginning at 10 p.m. ET/PT next week.

New York, NY- November 17, 2011- The music harvest is bountiful at VH1 this Thanksgiving with exclusive events featuring today’s biggest artists! Beginning Wednesday, November 23 at 10 p.m. ET/PT, music lovers can begin their Thanksgiving feast with a hearty portion of music by their favorite artists with the world television premiere of Clear Channel’s “iHeartRadio Music Festival” taped September 23rd and 24th, 2011at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. This show-stopping concert, which celebrated the launch of the new iHeartRadio, Clear Channel’s free, industry-leading digital radio product, includes performances by Carrie Underwood, Coldplay, Jennifer Lopez, Lady Gaga, Steven Tyler and many more.
VH1 Unplugged: Kelly Clarkson makes its highly anticipated premiere exclusively on VH1.com this Thursday night, November 17, at 7 p.m. ET. We’ve already told you how stunning Kelly looked when this show taped back in late October, and if you caught her cover of Carrie Underwood’s “I Know You Won’t” when we premiered it last week, you have an idea yourself. However, VH1 photographer Colin Gray just sent us a bunch of the photos that he was able to take that afternoon and we couldn’t resist sharing his insanely awesome work with you (as well as a quick video of Kelly explaining why she didn’t perform barefoot, like she usually does, while taping VH1 Unplugged). Enjoy!
“Metal dudes are people, too!” you shout, and we hear ya, we honestly do. But here’s the thing — we like to live under the fantasy, however inaccurate, that metal dudes just do totally awesome metal stuff all the time. We want to believe that metal dudes go around biting the heads off bats, smashing guitars, sticking it to the man and headbanging ALL THE TIME. The same way we like to believe that pop stars all eat, sleep and go to the gym in their elaborate costumes, rappers freestyle battle each other in the street and country singers all know how to lasso like cowboys.
Obviously, the illusions we live under (yes, we’re twisted, we know, but being twisted is like, SO metal), are unrealistic, and we have to admit we get a perverted sense of pleasure when the wall does come down. So if you want to see what metal dudes are doing when they’re not being metal, and just being sort of, well, regular, click through to our gallery below! Beware: there are images of James Hetfield WEARING A KNITTED SCARF! Slipknot‘s Corey Taylor READING BOOKS! Megadeth‘s Dave Mustaine HANGING OUT WITH A GEORGE W. BUSH IMPERSONATOR! If this is all just too much for you and all you want is to see metal guys being, like, totally metal, then check out National Metal Day on VH1 Classic, airing all day today!

We’re just one week and oh, say, six hours away from the premiere of VH1 Unplugged: Kelly Clarkson! Her five-song Unplugged set will debut exclusively on VH1.com at 7 p.m. ET on Thursday, November 17, but we absolutely, positively couldn’t wait that long to share the above clip with you.
As part of her set, Kelly decided to cover “I Know You Won’t,” which was originally recorded by another American Idol winner, Carrie Underwood, on her 2007 LP Carnival Ride . Carrie’s version is gorgeous, no doubt, but whereas her version is languid to the point of being passive, Kelly infuses her take—which, we should add, is brought to you by our friends at Starburst—with her trademark combination of dignity, strength, and a touch of heartbreak. Try to listen to the whole thing and not get goosebumps, we dare you.
Amidst the fanciful costumes and ostentatious fanfare of the annual Victoria’s Secret “fashion” show, some of our favorite artists got on stage to sing the angels down the runway. Nicki Minaj, in a characteristically brazen ensemble, gave the Angels a run for their money with her other-worldly costume, and was just as sexy as the girls stomping past her, even though she was—ahem, we hope you can appreciate the irony in this—dressed somewhat more demurely. Kanye West was joined by surprise Watch The Throne collaborator Jay-Z to perform their hits “Otis” and “Stronger.” Fashion-forward Kanye cheekily appeared to be wearing a bomber jacket from the yet-to-be-released Versace for H&M range. Maroon 5 also performed, with frontman Adam Levine getting all cute (or sickening, depending on how you feel about love and couples right now) on stage with his long-time model girlfriend Anne Vyalitsyna.

We had the pleasure of hooking up with former VH1 You Oughta Know artist and forever VH1 fave Sara Bareilles as she performed on the Today Show and chatted in a bowling alley with our very own Jim Shearer to support her latest album, Kaleidoscope Heart. Enjoy the pics and see comments from Sara below.
We already know Rihanna isn’t camera shy, and when it comes to hamming it up in front of the lens, the superstar is a super playful babe. Recently on vacation with her gal pals, RiRi posted this gallery of pics that show her being extra irreverent, cheeky and downright sexy on film. Fishing, drinking champagne, flipping more than one bird and generally getting up to mischief, Rihanna once again proves why she’s our very favorite…
