Heavy Metal’s 12 Most Badass Stage Names: You Won’t Believe The Stories Behind Them!

View Photo Gallery

You have a musical vision. You’ve got a sick band, some killer songs and a great live show. Unfortunately you were born SAUL HUDSON. It’s time to find a stage name. Such was the dilemma faced by many now-legendary hard rock and metal musicians. And though there were many horrible pseudonyms chosen throughout rock history, these guys were definitely not part of that crowd. Their names just exude cool. They feel big, important – sometimes even scary and intimidating (for this list, we’re talking complete reinventions, not just a first or last name change). But what are the real stories behind these iconic names? Where did they originate? Well, that’s what we’re about to find out. Because before they were effortlessly cool rock stars, they were Saul Hudson (Slash), Brian Hugh Warner (Marilyn Manson) and James Newell Osterberg, Jr. (Iggy Pop). So to celebrate this week’s That Metal Show guest, Robert Alan Deal (Mötley Crüe‘s Mick Mars), here’s the 12 most badass stage names in hard rock and heavy metal history. Perhaps some inspiration for you to change your own name and join this pantheon of legends. Or just get made fun of by your friends. All signs point to the latter.

View Photo Gallery

The bird, the one finger salute, the finger. It’s called many different things, but we all know what it means…and it ain’t nice. The obscene hand gesture dates back to the ancient Romans, presumably used during times of intense chariot traffic. But it’s persevered through the ages all the way to today. We all use it from time to time, but the finger is especially potent in (and on) the hands of famous musicians. Whether they’re onstage and asserting their badass-itude, or they’re out on the town and want the paparazzi to get lost, rock and rollers are never afraid to flip you off!

john_lennon_hard_rock_interview

Imagine this: You’re a college student, and you write a letter to your favorite rock hero asking to interview him for your school paper. It’s a long shot, but you’re young, you’re hopeful, and you have nothing to lose. But the response is better than your wildest dreams. Not only does the rock star agree, but he invites you over to his house to hang out for the day! It sounds like pure fantasy, but it actually came true for Maurice Hindle. Oh yeah, and the rock hero in question happens to be John Lennon.

Guess The Heavy Metal Crotch: Do You Know Which Rock Gods These Loins Belong To?

CROTCH_MAIN_ART

Rock and roll is for the most part about sex. Actually the term “Rock N’ Roll” is an old blues term which literally refers to rocking and rolling between the sheets, creating the two-backed beast, getting busy, in other words, having sex. So it makes sense that the music itself often deals with the actions happening down in the nether regions. Heavy metal, being one of the most outrageous permutations of rock n’roll, has a long history of not only celebrating that most holy of holies in song but in costume as well. From the skin-tight pants of ’70s rockers like Led Zeppelin that left little to the imagination to the attention grabbing codpieces of Kiss and others, heavy metal bands have always tried to bring your eyes below the belt. So rather than trying to dress things up and talk about rock n’ roll as a force for revolutionary self-examination and critical thinking we think it’s time to celebrate the great crotches of hard rock, both male and female. Take a guilt-free gander at the following groins and see if you can guess the rock gods they’re attached to. We promise not to judge if you stare too long. Read more…
